Media Molecule, the British studio best known for its LittleBigPlanet franchise and the ambitious Dreams, is reportedly developing a new social-simulation game that draws heavy inspiration from Nintendo’s Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. According to fresh reporting, the title could arrive in 2027 should development proceed as planned, marking the studio’s first major project since Dreams launched in early 2020.
The report, which originated from MP1st, suggests that Media Molecule has been working on the unannounced game for quite some time. While details remain scarce, sources indicate the project leans into the kind of relaxed, community-driven social-sim mechanics that have made Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon enduring hits. The studio will formally announce and release the title in 2027 if everything unfolds according to schedule.
A Long-Awaited Return for Media Molecule
This is not the first time speculation has swirled around what Media Molecule might be building next. Earlier this year, a Media Molecule employee revealed that the next game on their resume would be open-world, sparking widespread conjecture about the studio’s creative direction. The new social-sim report appears to align with those earlier hints, pointing toward an expansive, player-driven experience.

The developer’s last release, Dreams, arrived in early 2020 and was widely praised for its ambition as a game-creation tool. Despite critical acclaim, it ultimately failed to capture the broad audience that publishers had hoped for. That commercial underperformance arrives at a challenging moment for PlayStation, which has recently been highly selective about where it directs its investment.
The studio’s next project is reportedly in the vein of Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, utilizing the kinds of social-simulation elements that those games are known for.

A Risky Moment for PlayStation Studios
Media Molecule’s fortunes may well hinge on the success of its next project, given how Dreams failed to take off. The broader industry context offers little reassurance: Hideo Kojima’s next game, Physint, was nearly canceled by PlayStation until Xbox stepped in to rescue it. PlayStation also shuttered Bluepoint earlier this year and made significant cuts to Bungie following the underperformance of Marathon.
In that climate, a pivot toward the cozy, evergreen social-sim genre could prove either shrewd or risky. If Media Molecule can replicate the runaway success of Animal Crossing on PlayStation, it would demonstrate that the studio’s strengths lie in crafting warm, community-focused experiences rather than purely tool-oriented ones.
