Microsoft’s highly anticipated limited-edition 25th-Anniversary Xbox Series X has vanished from pre-order availability faster than you can say “Achievements unlocked!” While dedicated Xbox fans with deep pockets were hoping to snag this collector’s item, it seems scalpers were also ready and waiting, eager to capitalize on the hype.

Within minutes of opening pre-orders at a $900 price point, the 25th-Anniversary Xbox Series X was completely sold out. This isn’t entirely surprising given the console’s unique design and limited availability. However, what is disappointing is the immediate rush to resell these consoles on platforms like eBay, with prices already soaring.
A quick glance at eBay reveals a disturbing trend: dozens of listings for the rare Xbox Series X are already available, ranging from a “reasonable” $2,200 all the way up to an eye-watering $27,426. One seller in Australia seems to be aiming for the top spot on eBay’s search results with this incredibly optimistic price tag.
While some consoles have already been sold at these inflated prices, averaging between $1,900 and $2,300 per unit, it’s a stark reminder of the challenges faced during the early days of the current console generation. The semiconductor shortage made both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 incredibly difficult to find, with scalpers employing various tactics to snatch up restocks and resell them for exorbitant prices.
Thankfully, supply chains eventually stabilized, making it easier for gamers to access the latest consoles. However, a series of factors saw console prices surge upwards again last year, and there’s no immediate sign of relief in sight. This limited-edition Xbox is just another example of how scalpers continue to disrupt the gaming landscape.
It’s disheartening to see this happen, as it impacts not only dedicated gamers but also countless other hobbies. The Pokémon Trading Card Game, for instance, has been particularly hard hit by scalping practices. Every new restock at retailers usually sees scalpers buy up all available stock. Even seemingly innocuous items like Pokémon donuts aren’t safe, with the recent Krispy Kreme collaboration attracting individuals looking to make a quick buck.
