The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived: the first official gameplay reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6. While the stunning visuals of Vice City and the promise of an expansive open world are undeniably exciting, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when it comes to the mission structure. Let’s dive in.
The Allure of Vice City
From the moment the trailer began, Vice City was captivating. The vibrant colors, the bustling streets, and the sheer level of detail are truly impressive. Rockstar has clearly poured a massive amount of effort into creating a living, breathing world that begs to be explored. I’m already envisioning countless hours spent simply wandering around, discovering hidden gems, and getting into all sorts of trouble.
The gameplay footage showcased a wide range of activities, from eating at restaurants and sleeping in beds to skydiving and dirt bike racing. This level of immersion is what sets GTA apart from other open-world games, and it’s clear that Rockstar is pushing the boundaries even further with GTA 6. The promise of a “life sim” experience within the criminal underworld is incredibly appealing.
Same Mission, Different Century?
However, my enthusiasm was tempered by the mission structure itself. While the visuals are stunning, the core gameplay loop felt familiar, almost predictable. We’re presented with scenarios that follow a well-worn path: meet a character, engage in some dialogue and driving, and then inevitably end up in a shootout. This formula has been a staple of GTA games for years, and while it’s undeniably fun, I was hoping for something more innovative after 13 long years.
In the first mission shown, Jason and Lucia are involved in a drug deal gone wrong. The tension builds as they exchange uneasy words with the buyer, only to be interrupted by the arrival of the police. What follows is a chaotic shootout where our heroes must fight their way out of the building. This sequence, while exciting, felt like a retread of familiar territory.
Later in the video, we see Jason and Lucia further along in their story arc, working as security detail for a corporate executive. The mission involves some walking, talking, and a speech about the company’s new US headquarters. Predictably, the event is interrupted by professional killers, leading to another intense shootout. This pattern of introducing a character, engaging in dialogue, and then resorting to violence felt repetitive.
My hope is that the majority of GTA 6 breaks free from this predictable formula. I’m eager to see more missions centered around choices, mysteries, or simply having fun. While it’s undoubtedly a GTA game, wouldn’t the moments of intense action be even more impactful if they weren’t always telegraphed?
