Lanterns Fumbles Major Villain Introductions, But Hal & John’s Dynamic Still Shines

After a couple of weeks on hiatus, Lanterns returned with Episode 4, leaving fans hanging after the shocking debut of Sinestro in Episode 2. While the episode delivers on the highly anticipated reunion between Sinestro and Hal Jordan, it also raises concerns about how key characters are being utilized.

Sinestro’s Brief Appearance

Hal and Sinestro reunite in a tense prison scene.

The opening scene featuring Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) is a definite highlight. Thomsen delivers a menacing performance, capturing the complex history between his character and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. There’s a clear sense of camaraderie, but also an underlying manipulation that fans familiar with Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern run will recognize. However, the scene is far too short. Sinestro’s importance to the Green Lantern mythos demands more than a cameo appearance. The potential for exploring the dynamic between these two characters, perhaps through flashbacks or deeper conversations, feels wasted.

A tense standoff between Hal and Hector Hammond.

My main concern is that Sinestro’s role feels underdeveloped. I would have loved to see more of this sci-fi take on the Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter dynamic, whether it was through flashbacks or simply more scenes of the two conversing. It seems unlikely we’re going to see much more of Thomsen in Season 1, which is a missed opportunity.

Hector Hammond: A Wasted Opportunity

Hal and John confront Hector Hammond in a tense standoff.

Similarly disappointing is the introduction of Jason Manuel Olazábal as Hector Hammond. We get one solid scene with Hector, but then he’s revealed to be another pawn in the Manhunter’s game. Unlike Sinestro, there’s no prior history between Hal and Hector in this universe, making his appearance feel like a red herring. This is a major DC villain being effectively wasted as a one-off misdirection.

John Stewart contemplates the Green Lantern ring.

The episode does its best to highlight the growing friction between Hal and John. Both men are increasingly at odds with each other, hiding things and receiving conflicting advice. The question of whether John will betray Hal for the ring hangs heavy over every scene following his conversation with Lianna (Laura Linney). Will John’s unwavering obedience ultimately lead him down a dark path?

The Weenie and Beyond

Hal, John, and Will Macon share an awkward moment.

Despite the frustrations, Lanterns still delivers on its core strength: the dynamic between Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Their banter is genuinely funny, and the underlying tensions are palpable. The episode also features a memorable (and bizarre) scene involving Will Macon, adding another layer of humor to the proceedings.

Zoe reveals herself as Macon’s benefactor.

The reveal that Zoe is actually Macon’s mysterious benefactor is perhaps the least surprising twist in recent memory. However, it does serve a purpose, and I’m eager to see how this development impacts the Lanterns and Antaan’s crew.

Sheriff Kerry Kane stands as a figure of authority.

One intriguing detail that deserves attention is the background of Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), a former Gotham City native with the last name Kane. Could she be related to Kate Kane (and by extension, Bruce Wayne)? This connection could lead to some interesting developments later in the season.

Final Thoughts

Lanterns Episode 4 is a mixed bag. While it features major Green Lantern villains, their appearances feel rushed and underdeveloped. However, the core dynamic between Hal Jordan and John Stewart remains strong, providing plenty of humor and tension. With the mystery of the undercover Manhunter seemingly solved, and the conflict in Rushville heating up, Episode 5 promises to be a pivotal moment in the season.
