Get ready for a social deduction game unlike any other! “4 Penny Coffins,” the upcoming title from Other Ocean Interactive, is blending the chilling atmosphere of Victorian London with the chaotic fun of games like “Among Us.” Imagine Jack the Ripper, but with a multiplayer twist – and a healthy dose of dark humor. Ahead of its gameplay teaser debut at gamescom 2026 (which you can check out below), I had the chance to chat with Other Ocean Interactive Marketing Manager Jared Petty about what makes this game so unique.

“It’s a goddamn blast,” says Petty, describing his experience playing “4 Penny Coffins.” The core gameplay revolves around two modes: the multiplayer “Ripper” mode and the solo “Magistrate” mode. In “Ripper” mode, up to eight players take on different forensic roles, hunting for the hidden murderer among them. But here’s the catch: one of you is secretly the Ripper – a “gleeful demon concealed behind a facade of humanity,” lurking in the shadows of 1888 London.
The game’s humor, Petty explains, is inspired by gaming legends like Tim Schafer. “Humor and horror have always gone together so well,” he says. “[Four Penny Coffins] having a multiplayer mode and being a very socially-oriented one creates all kinds of opportunities. Our philosophy was that the comical allows you to laugh so you don’t scream.”
If you love trolling your friends, “4 Penny Coffins” is your playground. But if you prefer a more solitary experience, the “Magistrate” mode offers a different kind of challenge. “It’s way more Sherlock Holmes-y,” Petty explains. You’re presented with a group of suspects locked up in jail, and it’s your job to use all the forensic tools at your disposal to identify the Ripper before time runs out.

Beyond the gameplay mechanics, “4 Penny Coffins” boasts a distinctive visual style that sets it apart. The game primarily uses black and white imagery, reminiscent of old woodcut newspapers and grainy photographs from the era. This creates a sense of abstraction that is both evocative and unsettling. As Petty puts it, “We wanted to create a sense of abstraction that was evocative of the age.”
While “4 Penny Coffins” promises plenty of murder, violence, and mayhem, you don’t have to be a horror fan to enjoy it. According to Petty, it’s simply a great game for friends and solo players alike. “It’s just really kind of a chill mental exercise, almost a puzzle,” he says. “If you like puzzle games, you’re going to love [it].” So, get ready to sharpen your detective skills and prepare for a bloody good time in “4 Penny Coffins”!
