Players exploring World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard Entertainment’s free-to-play recreation of the original 2004 game, have discovered a delightfully hideous little companion hiding in the grasses of Mulgore. That creature is a prairie dog rendered in its ancient, jagged polygonal form — one of the ugliest critters ever designed for Azeroth, and now lovingly preserved for fans who remember when the franchise first introduced these cow-people-haunting plains.

The original prairie dogs that scurry through Mulgore’s rolling grasslands were never meant to be beautiful. Built during an era of limited hardware and crude modeling tools, they arrived as hunched, pointy-headed monstrosities with hollow, empty eyes. Blizzard eventually replaced them with a far cuter model in the retail version of the game, but that original design lives on inside WoW: Forever, where it has once again captured the hearts — and amusement — of players.

A Prairie Dog Like No Other

Prairie dogs are real rodents that burrow through the plains of North America, playing an important role in their ecosystems as prey for countless other species. They may not be favored by farmers, but they remain a beloved sight among anyone who enjoys seeing funny little creatures scurry across the dirt.

The World of Warcraft version is quite another matter entirely. Far from cute, these virtual dogs are by far the ugliest creature in all of Azeroth, and perhaps among the most unsettling animals ever rendered in a video game.

“Waagh, woah, yikes! What happened to you, little guy? Why is your head…pointy like that? Why are your eyes so…empty?”

The full body model fares no better. As documented on Wowhead, the creature sits perpetually hunched over in a posture best described as monstrous. Its tiny frame scurries across the grass with surprising speed, making it difficult to capture — though targeting one does reveal an uncomfortably close-up view of its face.

The Allure of Imperfection

For many longtime fans, this very ugliness is precisely what makes the creature so charming. The original prairie dog represents a specific moment in gaming history, when developers built worlds with whatever crude tools were available and produced results that were unmistakably their own.

“I love it,” one player declared after encountering the critter once more. “This is what the prairie dog currently looks like in WoW: Forever, because it’s based on the original version of WoW.”

The player noted that Blizzard eventually replaced the model with one that actually resembles a cute prairie dog, and that cuter version now exists in the retail game. But fans of the old polygonal design remain numerous — which is why seeing this “freakin’ weirdo” reappear in WoW: Forever has proven so delightful.

The creature can even be kept as a pet. Players who visit Thunder Bluff and linger near the Hunter’s Rise entrance will find a helpful NPC named Halpa, who sells a prairie dog companion for 50 silver — a small price to pay for the joy of owning one of Azeroth’s most gloriously ugly pets.

Looking Ahead

The enduring affection for this humble critter underscores something larger about World of Warcraft: Forever. As Blizzard continues to build out its free-to-play recreation of the original game, players have grown increasingly invested in preserving every detail — no matter how imperfect. From working torches that send explorers hiking across Azeroth, to weather systems that have “players losing their minds,” the community’s enthusiasm shows no signs of fading.

The polygonal prairie dog may be hideous by any reasonable standard, but it has become a symbol of an era and an experience worth remembering. May it continue to thrive in the vast plains of North America, and in the jagged, beautiful plains of Mulgore — where we will love it forever.
