Hold onto your helmets, true believers! Veteran actor Ian McKellen, beloved for his portrayal of Magneto in the X-Men film franchise, appears to have accidentally dropped a massive spoiler regarding events in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday. While reminiscing about his career and stunt work, McKellen seemingly confirmed the destruction of New Jersey – a revelation that has sent shockwaves through the Marvel fandom.
Magneto’s Big Mouth Moment
During an interview with YouTube channel Jake’s Takes“>Jake’s Takes, McKellen was discussing his physical workload over the years. He recalled a memorable scene from X-Men: The Last Stand, where “Two police cars in front of me were raised up by cranes… Nowadays I think things will become a little bit easier — though I did destroy New Jersey the other day.” Realizing his blunder, McKellen quickly added, “Oooh, I perhaps shouldn’t have said that…”
The internet, of course, exploded with speculation. What could this possibly mean for the MCU? While details are scarce, the “Avengers: Doomsday” X-Men-focused Avengers: Doomsday trailer“>trailer (which is that’s apparently not actually a trailer“>apparently not even a real trailer) offers some clues. We see Magneto and Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, engaged in what seems to be their final chess match at the X-Mansion. The atmosphere is heavy with foreboding, as we also witness the school being reduced to rubble and James Marsden’s Cyclops unleashing a devastating attack against what appear to be Sentinels.
The prevailing theory revolves around the X-Men being integrated into the “Doomsday” narrative through the fracturing of the multiverse. The incursions, as seen in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and hinted at in Captain Marvel, could be the catalyst for this convergence. Did Magneto take drastic measures to prevent an incursion within his universe, resulting in the destruction of New Jersey? Given that Westchester County, home to the X-Mansion, is a relatively short distance from New Jersey, the connection seems plausible.

Alternatively, could this be a devastating event occurring within the main MCU timeline? This would undoubtedly have significant ramifications for the entire saga, especially considering the likely reset at the end of Avengers: Secret Wars. It would also bring Kamala Khan, a resident of Jersey City, and potentially her burgeoning group of Young Avengers into the fray. If true, it suggests that Magneto (and possibly other X-Men) could survive the attack on the X-Mansion and venture into another reality to continue the fight.
Whatever unfolds, we’re counting down the days until Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th. One thing is certain: for once, Manhattan might get a break from all the superhero action!
