Rockstar Games is set to push open-world environmental simulation to new heights with Grand Theft Auto 6, introducing fully dynamic weather systems that include localized rainstorms, realistic rainbows, and sweeping tropical storms and hurricanes. The details emerged through Game Informer’s cover story on the highly anticipated title, in which senior associate editor Marcus Stewart described how the studio has re-engineered its weather engine to reflect the wild climate shifts characteristic of Florida, the real-world inspiration for the game’s fictional state of Leonida.

While it was already known that GTA 6 would feature some form of advanced weather system, the depth of Rockstar’s approach has become clearer through the publication. The studio’s map is reportedly three times larger than those found in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, making the simulation of moving storm systems across such an expansive world an even more impressive technical achievement. In practice, players should expect to experience a localized rain shower in one area while the neighboring region basks in sunshine, a level of environmental granularity that carries lasting effects on the world itself.

A Weather System Re-Engineered for Realism

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, explained the studio’s philosophy behind the overhaul. “We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent,” Shepherd told Stewart, noting that “the world features new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map.” This suggests that weather patterns are no longer static overlays but living systems that traverse the environment, reshaping how players perceive and navigate the world of Leonida.

The persistent nature of the weather is perhaps what makes the system most compelling. According to Stewart, Rockstar revealed that “GTA 6’s rain creates realistic rainbows under the right lighting conditions, and that recently showered areas will remain wet on the ground and create persistent puddles once the storm passes.” These subtle details lend a convincing sense of continuity to the world, where the environment continues to react and change even after a storm has moved on.

When Weather Turns Violent

Where the weather system truly sets itself apart, however, is in its more extreme manifestations. In real life, Florida is notorious for its unpredictable and sometimes dangerous weather, and GTA 6 appears to embrace that reputation by simulating tropical storms and hurricanes that will wreak havoc on the environment. Shepherd described the experience in vivid terms, saying these storms bring “heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lighting light up the clouds dramatically.”

These descriptions paint a picture of an environment that responds dramatically to severe weather, with water cascading off structures and dramatic lightning illuminating the skies. While Game Informer’s cover story does not include video footage demonstrating these systems in action, the combination of persistent environmental effects and violent storm simulations has left reporters imagining the possibilities. Will the streets flood? Will buildings and trees be knocked down by the winds? The potential applications are vast, and the detail suggests Rockstar intends for weather to be a meaningful factor in gameplay rather than mere visual flair.
