Rockstar Games is pulling back the curtain on some of GTA 6’s features, and it seems fishing and hunting are going to be more about the experience than the dinner plate. While we knew these activities would be present in Vice City, details revealed by Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson paint a picture that might surprise long-time fans.
Fishing: Catch and Release Only
Speaking with YouTuber TGG, Nelson confirmed that fishing in GTA 6 is strictly catch and release. Players won’t be able to keep any of their catches. When asked why, Nelson stated simply, “It didn’s fit this game.” Instead, fishing will serve as a fun activity for players to enjoy, with opportunities to complete challenges and collect unique items.
This is quite different from Red Dead Redemption II, where players could catch various fish and then cook and eat them. Given the modern-day setting of GTA 6, it makes sense that characters like Jason and Lucia have access to a wide range of food options. Eating food in GTA 6 will affect your character’s weight, and players can strategically use those extra calories to build muscle at the gym.
Hunting: A Source of Income (and Maybe Some Suspense)
Nelson also discussed the hunting system, revealing that it’s one of many ways in the game that players can make money. The hunting system is unlocked through a contact who knows Jason. Interestingly, TGG theorizes that this character hasn’t been shown in any of the GTA 6 footage released so far, adding another layer of mystery to the game.
Beyond just catching fish and bagging animals, players will be able to “inspect” the creatures, a feature borrowed from Red Dead Redemption 2. And for those who love their furry companions, GTA 6 also features dogs that you can pet, scold (you monster), and inspect.
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. At the State of Play event on September 3, Sony and Rockstar announced a GTA 6-themed DualSense controller to celebrate the upcoming release.
