GTA 6: Carjacking Gets a Realistic Overhaul

Get ready to rethink how you steal cars in Grand Theft Auto VI. Forget the simple button press and instant getaway; Rockstar Games is injecting a dose of realism into one of the series’ most iconic mechanics. From lockpicking minigames to tracker technology, GTA 6 promises a more nuanced and challenging carjacking experience.

Stealing Cars: A New Era

In GTA 6, there are two primary ways to acquire a vehicle: taking a stationary car or intercepting one with an occupant. However, the devil is in the details, and Rockstar is adding layers of complexity that will change how you approach this familiar gameplay element.

To steal a parked car, Jason might employ a “slim jim” – a classic tool for breaking into older vehicles. This triggers a lockpicking minigame, but not all cars are created equal. Newer and more expensive models may require different methods or even prove impossible to unlock with this technique.

Adding another layer of challenge is the presence of vehicle trackers. These devices allow law enforcement to monitor your location after you steal a car, significantly raising the stakes. To avoid detection, you’re going to need an item to disable these trackers, which aren’t readily available at the start of the game.

Interestingly, driving fast enough can actually throw off the police tracker, adding a thrilling element of cat-and-mouse. However, if you slow down, they’ll pinpoint your location, forcing you to make strategic decisions about speed and risk.

When dealing with occupied vehicles, the process is slightly different. In some cases, doors might not be locked, allowing you to simply walk up and initiate a quick-time event (QTE) to wrestle the driver out of the car. However, even then, the tracker remains active, requiring you to find a way to disable it.

Vehicle Security and Impound Lots

How do you know what kind of security a given car possesses? The in-game app “Waink” allows you to scan vehicles and reveals information about their security systems and the cost of registering them as your own. This adds another layer of strategic planning to your heists.

Another interesting detail is that if you ditch one of your own cars while being pursued by the police, they’ve been known to set up a perimeter around it. Returning to your abandoned vehicle could result in an ambush, or the car might be impounded. This opens up new gameplay possibilities, such as sneaking into the impound lot or paying the fee to retrieve your ride.

The introduction of these mechanics means that you can’t just instantly steal any car you see. Better vehicles will be gradually introduced throughout the game, requiring you to work for them through legitimate or less-than-legal means.

Strategic Heists and Getaway Planning

This new level of complexity extends to robberies and other activities. You’re going to need a well-thought-out plan and a reliable getaway car. Previously, you could simply acquire the nearest suitable vehicle, but in GTA 6, you might not have the equipment to stealthily steal it, or you might lack the means to remove the tracker.

This necessitates pre-planning your heists. Perhaps one character will act as a lookout with a getaway car ready, while the other executes the robbery. Or maybe you’ll choose a vehicle early on, steal it, park it nearby, and then complete the heist knowing you have an escape route.

GTA 6 is bringing about many more changes for the series. While many thought Jason and Lucia would be in a romantic relationship, it turns out <that’s not actually necessary . The game has also <removed the need to button mash to sprint – something I’ve been desperate for.
