A somber announcement has rippled through the gaming community: Konami’s Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, a beloved title exclusive to Apple Arcade, is drawing its final curtain. While the game enjoyed a period of renewed life on the subscription service, its time is now limited, leaving players with bittersweet memories and a longing for more.

A Swan Song for Grimoire

In a joint statement posted across Konami’s social media channels and the game’s official website, the developer confirmed that Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls will be removed from Apple Arcade on August 20th. Even more disheartening, the game will cease to be playable entirely on September 3rd, marking a permanent shutdown.

“We would like to express our gratitude to all of our players for their enthusiastic support throughout the years,” Konami stated. “The entire development and operations team sincerely thanks you for being part of this journey.” While the sentiment is appreciated, the lack of concrete reasoning behind the decision has left many fans questioning what could have prompted such a drastic measure.

A Rocky Road to Apple Arcade

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls originally debuted in 2019 but was later pulled from mobile storefronts. It then resurfaced as an Apple Arcade exclusive in September 2021, boasting several enhancements, including the removal of controversial microtransactions. This re-release offered a cleaner and more focused experience for players.

At the time of its initial release, Grimoire of Souls represented the first new entry in the mainline Castlevania series since 2014’s Castlevania: Lord of Shadows 2. Its compelling story concluded back in 2022 with an update that provided new revelations related to Dracula’s defeat in 1990’s Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.

A Familiar Feel, Modern Appeal

Despite its mobile origins, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls largely adheres to the classic 2D gameplay that defines the franchise. Featuring character designs from the legendary Ayami Kojima and a soundtrack composed by Michiru Yamane, the game captures the essence of what makes Castlevania so enduring. Players can choose from a roster of iconic characters, including Alucard and Simon Belmont, and even team up with friends in multiplayer co-op.

The outpouring of reactions on X regarding the game’s impending shutdown, as well as comments on its launch trailer on YouTube, clearly demonstrate a strong desire among fans to see Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls ported to consoles or PC. Whether Konami will heed this call and eventually release the game on other platforms remains an open question.

Hope on the Horizon

While the news surrounding Grimoire of Souls is undoubtedly disappointing, there’s a silver lining for Castlevania enthusiasts. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse , from the acclaimed studio behind Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia, is slated for release this December. Despite the developer’s pedigree in the roguelite genre, Konami assures fans that Belmont’s Curse will be a Castlevania game in the classic style , promising a return to the series’ roots.
