Grand Theft Auto 6: Stunning Visuals, But Locked at 30FPS? Digital Foundry Breaks It Down

The wait is finally over! Rockstar Games has unveiled the first major gameplay reveal for Grand Theft Auto 6, and the internet is buzzing. While we’re all drooling over the expansive open world and intricate details, the experts at Digital Foundry are dissecting every frame to understand what makes this game a potential visual masterpiece – and why it’s seemingly capped at 30 frames per second.

A Visual Feast: The Details That Wow

Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter have lauded GTA 6’s visual presentation, with Mackenzie even calling it “the most impressive example of real-time game rendering” he’s ever witnessed. The pair highlighted standout features like the incredibly realistic character rendering, particularly the hair physics and skin details that extend beyond just the protagonist to many NPCs throughout the game.

The implementation of ray tracing also received high praise. Digital Foundry pointed out how Rockstar has strategically employed it in areas where it delivers the most significant visual impact, while simultaneously relying on more conventional rendering techniques to maintain a balance between fidelity and performance. This careful approach seems crucial for achieving the overall look and feel of the game.

Performance Concerns: Why 30FPS?

Naturally, performance was a major topic of discussion, especially considering the rocky launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 on older consoles. While Rockstar has historically prioritized visual quality over frame rate, it appears that approach might have evolved with GTA 6. Digital Foundry noted that while the game renders at 30 frames per second, this target seems consistently maintained, with minimal dips observed during their extensive analysis of all 48,242 frames.

According to Digital Foundry’s calculations , the gameplay preview was rendered natively at 1440p and then upscaled to 4K without utilizing a modern upscaling technique. This results in a slightly softer image that hopefully will be refined before the full release. The team also reaffirmed its earlier prediction that Rockstar is unlikely to offer a 60fps performance mode for GTA 6 on current-generation consoles, even if it means sacrificing some of the stunning visual fidelity.

While the PlayStation 5 Pro might offer improved ray-traced effects or potentially higher resolution targets, the CPU remains the primary bottleneck in a world with such extensive simulation. Achieving significantly faster rendering times without a substantially more powerful processor seems nearly impossible. This limitation might be something that a future PC release could address.
