Pipeworks Hints at Potential Godzilla Remasters: Will We Finally Get a Proper ‘Unleashed’?

Get ready to roar! With the upcoming release of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, fans are clamoring for more. And while Pipeworks has confirmed that this is currently the only remaster in development, hints dropped during a recent interview suggest that other beloved titles in the Godzilla franchise could be next in line. Could we finally see a proper resurrection of Godzilla: Unleashed, a game notorious for its troubled release?

A Glimpse into the Future

During an extensive conversation with IGN, senior designer Simon Strange addressed the possibility of remasters for Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed. While stopping short of making any concrete promises, Strange expressed a clear desire to revisit these classic titles. “Let me tell you, I had that desire long before we announced this game,” he admitted. “I want to do all that stuff, too.”

The key lies in the technology developed for Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered. A Pipeworks engineer recently created a tool that allows them to extract assets from the original Spigot engine and seamlessly integrate them into Unreal Engine. This opens up exciting possibilities for upgrading other games in the arena fighter trilogy.

However, there’s a significant hurdle: securing the necessary contracts with publisher Atari. The development team has grown considerably since the original GameCube titles were created. What was once a small group of “12 people in one room” has expanded to around 300 individuals working on numerous projects simultaneously. Allocating resources effectively is a complex undertaking, and the demand for more Godzilla remasters needs to be carefully assessed.

Addressing the ‘Unleashed’ Elephant in the Room

One title that seems to hold particular significance is Godzilla: Unleashed. Strange acknowledged the game’s troubled history and expressed a desire to “avenge the sort of mediocre release” it received. He emphasized that a simple remaster wouldn’t suffice, suggesting a more comprehensive overhaul would be necessary to truly do justice to the content. This sentiment aligns with the general consensus among fans, who often view Godzilla: Unleashed as the weakest entry in Pipeworks’ Godzilla trilogy.

Metacritic reflects this sentiment, with Godzilla: Unleashed holding a “Generally Unfavorable” score of 44. In contrast, Destroy All Monsters Melee boasts a respectable 73, while Save the Earth sits at 63. These scores highlight the disparity in quality and underscore the need for a significant improvement if Unleashed were to be revisited.

What’s Next?

While nothing is officially planned beyond Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, the door remains open. “We’ve got a whole biz dev section, Atari’s got a whole biz dev section, they’re talking based on the response,” Strange explained. “There’s a lot of conversations to be had in the future, and I’m very excited for all of that.”

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is slated for release on November 3, 2026, for PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Until then, we’re eagerly awaiting further updates and hoping that the future holds more roars of Godzilla goodness.
