The wait is finally over! Rockstar Games has officially unveiled the first gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6, sending shockwaves through the gaming world. IGN is reporting live with all the news from across the internet, and we’re here to break down everything you need to know about this highly anticipated sequel.
A Decade in the Making
GTA 6 was confirmed four-and-a-half years ago, marking the next chapter in Rockstar’s phenomenally successful franchise. After two trailers and a couple of delays, we finally have an official gameplay reveal. The initial footage, dubbed “Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look,” premiered exclusively on Netflix for six hours before being widely distributed. This extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage running on the PlayStation 10.
The development team at Rockstar has been hard at work for over a decade to bring this vision to life. Production designer Terrance Radcliff shared his excitement, planning to watch the extended look with both coworkers and family. Sara Lazzeroni, an associate principal 3D graphic artist, revealed she’s dedicated a quarter of her life to working on GTA 6! The outpouring of enthusiasm from Rockstar developers across social media underscores their pride in finally sharing this moment with the world.
“It’s an honor to be working with the most professional, brilliant, and kind people on the planet over the most immersive game ever made, not to mention one of the most complex computer systems in human existence,” wrote one developer. “Enjoy!!!”
Jason & Lucia: A Dynamic Duo
During an interview with IGN, Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained the design decisions behind making Jason and Lucia’s relationship a key element of the story, although not directly tied to gameplay mechanics. “I have to say it feels great — if you are into it as a concept. Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you,” said Nelson. While players can seamlessly switch between both playable characters, the decision on how deeply they want to engage with their relationship is entirely up to them.
The question on everyone’s lips: Jason or Lucia? After watching the GTA 6 gameplay reveal, I’m leaning towards Lucia (that one-handed shotgun reload might have sealed the deal!). But ultimately, it’s up to each player to decide which character resonates more.
A World of Possibilities
Fans, streamers, and game developers alike are praising the GTA 6 footage. Numerous comments highlight the highly-detailed character design and animation. Streamers have also weighed in, particularly about the appearance of a N3on lookalike IRL streaming in the extended look!
Even Hotline Miami publisher Devolver Digital, known for its playful jabs at other companies, couldn’s resist chiming in with a tongue-in-cheek tweet.
Vice City: Bigger and Bolder
As reported by The New York Times, GTA 6’s Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos in GTA 5. Rockstar also revealed that the overall map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. This expansive world promises countless hours of exploration and adventure.
The game producer stated it took him 80 hours to finish the game back in February, including main story and some “optional goals with narrative ramifications.” Nelson ultimately hopes fans take their time with the game and don’t rush through it.
Side Activities Galore
The GTA 6 gameplay reveal showcased a number of side activities that will no doubt keep us busy for hours. From rally racing tracks to base-jumping off tall buildings, there’s something for everyone in this expansive world.
Visual Spectacle
The visuals of GTA 6 are simply stunning. The level of detail, fluidity of animations, and density of the environments are truly impressive, even at a massive scale. This is especially evident given that the gameplay footage was captured on PS10.
Music & Marketing Mania
Rockstar’s first official extended look at GTA 6 features a lot of licensed music, and we’ve got the list of every song it featured right here. The GTA 6 gameplay is now live on Netflix, and IGN has loads of fresh exclusive content on the game.
Miami Takeover?
Florida officials and Rockstar Games are in conversations to turn parts of Miami into Vice City for GTA 6’s marketing campaign. This ambitious plan could transform iconic landmarks into virtual replicas for a truly immersive promotional experience.
Release Date & Developer Concerns
While the November launch of GTA 6 is expected to dominate the entertainment landscape, some developers aren’t overly concerned. According to the CEO of Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead, there are two very good reasons why developers shouldn’t be too worried.
GTA 6 Leaks & Trailer History
Analysis of overnight cryptocurrency transactions points to the prolific GTA 6 leaker having “cashed out” of their meme coin, earning around $270,000 in the process. Rockstar then released GTA 6 Trailer 2 in May 2025, a year-and-a-half after Trailer 1. Anticipation was fever pitch at this point, with fans going down increasingly elaborate rabbit holes in their bid for new details and release date.
Rockstar formally announced GTA 6 in December 2023 with the release of Trailer 1. The developer confirmed the Trailer 1 launch window a month prior, issuing a rare statement from Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser:
Ahead of the Netflix reveal, a cover story for Dazed magazine, revealed new information about GTA 6, which we’ve rounded up here. Highlights include players being able to eat, work out, and sleep, each of which has an impact on the game’s two protagonists, Jason and Lucia.
