Gears of War: E-Day launches today with a stripped-down feature set, confirming that beloved legacy mechanics such as taking enemies hostage as “meat shields” and dueling with chainsaw attachments on Lancer assault rifles will not be available at launch. The Coalition revealed in a developer blog that these features could not be built out for the game’s release because this prequel was constructed from scratch rather than built upon the foundation of previous Gears of War titles.

The multiplayer-focused prequel, which kicks off its first Season with an Early Access release at 8am PT / 11am ET today, runs for eight weeks until December 1. The developer acknowledged that this ground-up approach came with trade-offs, prioritizing a unified gameplay experience across Campaign, PVE and PVP modes over the inclusion of every fan-favourite feature from the series’ history.

Building From an Empty Hard Drive

The Coalition explained that starting E-Day without relying on existing code allowed for meaningful innovation in cover systems, combat mechanics and enemy design. However, this freedom meant that replicating decades of accumulated features was simply not feasible for the launch window.

“We started E-Day with an empty hard drive building our entire gameplay sandbox from scratch to ensure a more unified gameplay experience across Campaign, PVE and PVP,” The Coalition said. “This new sandbox also allowed for innovation in cover, combat and enemies. The trade-off being that including every legacy feature from Gears of War was not possible for launch.”

The studio committed to delivering these missing features—including Private Lobbies and leaderboards—either post-launch or in a future title, though it offered no concrete timeline for when players might see them arrive.

A New Approach to the Gnasher Shotgun

Beyond what was cut from the game, The Coalition also detailed significant changes to the Gnasher, Gears of War’s iconic shotgun that transforms defeated opponents into a shower of particles. In previous installments, hip firing the weapon produced a blast in whatever direction your character faced.

In E-Day, this system has been overhauled to blend camera aiming with muzzle position, giving players greater precision and control over those crucial close-range shots. This adjustment reflects the studio’s broader philosophy of refining core mechanics rather than simply carrying them forward unchanged from earlier games.

A Studio Facing Uncertainty

The feature cuts arrive against a backdrop of significant turmoil at The Coalition and its parent company. Last month, Xbox laid off an additional 268 members of staff, with the story director of E-Day among those let go. This follows a broader pattern of restructuring that has cast doubt on the studio’s future.

In June 2024, Microsoft pledged to continue the Gears of War story and resolve the cliffhanger left by Gears 5’s ending, though it noted plans to first deliver this prequel. Whether that promise holds likely hinges on E-Day’s commercial performance, with developers reportedly concerned they could face cuts as soon as the game launches.

Looking Ahead

E-Day’s first Season launches alongside the Early Access window and includes all maps, modes and cosmetics available at release, along with three seasonal events: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears, and Thanksgibbing. Ranked modes are scheduled to arrive later on October 13.

The community response has been mixed, with fans expressing disappointment over the absence of classic features while acknowledging the challenges of rebuilding a franchise from the ground up. As players dive into E-Day’s eight-week Season, all eyes will remain on whether The Coalition can deliver on its promises and whether Microsoft follows through on its commitment to conclude the Gears of War saga.
