Developers at The Coalition are reportedly bracing for layoffs as their long-awaited title Gears of War: E-Day approaches release, following months of intense overtime and a wave of restructuring that has left staff anxious about their futures. According to a Eurogamer report drawing on comments from multiple sources within Microsoft’s dedicated Gears of War team, the mood inside the studio has shifted dramatically from anticipation to unease as the five-year development cycle draws to a close.

The Coalition, which has been building E-Day for roughly half a decade, had previously felt somewhat insulated from Microsoft’s repeated rounds of job cuts. Staff believed their work on such a high-profile franchise would protect them, but with production winding down and reports of heavy crunch in the final stretch, those assurances now feel hollow. Employees say they are simply waiting for the next wave of redundancies to fall.

A Studio Left “On Edge”

The atmosphere at The Coalition has grown increasingly tense as staff recognize that their flagship project is nearing completion. One source described the unusual state of mind gripping the studio, noting that celebrations have been deliberately postponed out of fear for what comes next.

“The mood is certainly ‘let’s not celebrate the game until we’re three months post launch, just in case’, which is very unusual.”

Others pointed to broader structural uncertainty within Microsoft Gaming. One staff member claimed they are simply expecting further cuts or reorganization under Activision later this year.

A Year of Seismic Restructuring

The anxiety at The Coalition arrives against a backdrop of unprecedented change for Microsoft’s gaming division. In July, Xbox boss Asha Sharma unveiled a plan to cut 3,200 jobs across the company this year, with the first 1,600 redundancies announced alongside that initial reveal. Last month, a second batch of layoffs was confirmed together with major structural changes that saw Halo Studios downsized and its flagship Halo franchise handed to Activision, which will also manage veteran British studio Rare.

With such dramatic shifts affecting Xbox’s most iconic shooters, employees at The Coalition suddenly found their own job security far less certain than they had once believed. That uncertainty was compounded by the recent departure of Gears of War: E-Day story director Juan Vaca, who reportedly laid off just two weeks before the game’s release.

“I can only imagine the heartbreak of spending all those years on a game to have the final stretch ripped away, completely out of your control. It’s like you planned for a year on a meal for your family where everyone will be there and the day of, you get locked out of the building or something and can’t join in.”

Microsoft’s Response

Microsoft declined to provide an official response to Eurogamer for its report. However, it is understood that the company has acknowledged staff have worked hard to get E-Day out the door, noting that this extra effort includes out-of-hours toil that will be repaid in additional holiday time.

The studio’s workforce remains skeptical of leadership promises even if The Coalition is told it is safe for now. One employee expressed deep distrust following how previous staff were discarded.

“It’s hard to believe anything [Microsoft leadership] say anymore after discarding staff in this manner.”

Xbox has yet to detail when its final round of layoffs this year will take place. The situation comes even as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently described the Xbox layoffs as “streamlining” at the company that was “great to see,” a characterization that stands in stark contrast to the fears felt by those on the inside.

Looking Ahead

As Gears of War: E-Day inches closer to its release date, The Coalition staff remain caught between finishing one of Microsoft’s most anticipated titles and facing an uncertain professional future. Whether the studio will be spared from further cuts or absorbed into Activision’s expanding structure remains unclear, leaving employees to hope that celebrating their hard work can finally happen without fear of what follows.
