Greg Weisman, the brilliant mind behind the original show, has confirmed the heartbreaking news, leaving fans wondering what could have been.
A Dream Crushed: What Happened to the Gargoyles Reboot?
The project, spearheaded by James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company for Disney+, was shaping up to be a dark and gritty reimagining of the classic tale. However, according to Weisman’s statement to ComicsOnline, “the live-action side of it… that’s dead.” While the future of an animated adaptation remains unclear, the live-action dream is no more.
For those unfamiliar, Gargoyles originally premiered in 1994 and followed a clan of gargoyles who awaken in modern-day New York City, tasked with protecting the city from various threats. The show was renowned for its compelling characters, intricate storylines, and Keith David’s iconic voice performance as Goliath.
The live-action reboot, announced in 2023, had Annabelle and The Nun writer Gary Dauberman attached as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Dauberman previously described his vision for the project, emphasizing its potential to capture the “darkness” of the original while bringing it to a new audience. Unfortunately, that vision will no longer see the light of day.
Remembering the Original: Gargoyles Still Available on Disney+
While the live-action reboot is canceled, there’s still plenty of Gargoyles content available for fans to enjoy. All three seasons of the original animated series are currently streaming on Disney+. As IGN writer Rachel Weber highlighted in a 2021 retrospective, the show “helped to redefine cartoon villainy in the ’90s,” and remains a timeless classic.
