The annual Gamescom event, a highlight for gamers and developers alike, has been marred by a series of thefts that have left several indie studios reeling. Indie Devs Targeted in Gamescom Heist
The situation first came to light when indie developer Ryan Laley took to social media to announce that all of his team’s laptops had been stolen from their booth. The loss was described as “a huge blow financially and mentally,” prompting an outpouring of support from the gaming community. Fortunately, Laley received a surprising offer of assistance: CD Projekt Red, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077, offered to help by offering resources from its own hardware archives.
However, Laley’s experience was not isolated. Fellow indie developer Tessera Studios reported that their storage had been broken into and robbed of controllers, a 2026 games demo, and two laptops containing crucial company data. Marcos Neila, co-founder of Tessera Studios, expressed disappointment in a video message, highlighting the lack of insurance coverage from Gamescom for stolen equipment.
Publisher and Marketing Firm Also Affected
The wave of thefts extended beyond indie developers, impacting larger publishers as well. iam8bit, a prominent publisher known for its collector’s editions, reported that two of their laptops had been stolen overnight. This incident raised concerns about the potential leak of unfinished builds for games like Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2, which they were showcasing at the event.
Even marketing and PR firm Ukiyo Studios, a regular Gamescom attendee, fell victim to the thefts. While sharing Laley’s post, Ukiyo Studios revealed that they had dedicated storage rooms for their equipment after a PC was stolen from their booth in 2024. “We’ve had something stolen at Gamescom each year,” they noted, expressing hope that Gamescom would improve its security measures.
Security Concerns Mount
The following day, Ukiyo Studios reported an additional theft from their booth: “an Xbox controller, drinks, and food.” Other attendees echoed these sentiments, with Dead by Daylight senior community director Eric Pope claiming that a security guard had simply walked away when questioned about after-hours booth security. Insider Gaming described the overall security as “a farce,” citing instances of children freely accessing restricted areas.
Gamescom Responds to Criticism
In an official statement, Gamescom acknowledged the reported thefts and expressed concern for the affected exhibitors. They emphasized that uniformed guards provide general security across the venue, while individual stand security can be booked separately. Exhibitors are advised to insure their equipment against theft, a detail noted in the event’s terms and conditions.
