The Genre Genesis: From Modern Titans to 1995 Pioneers

Post-apocalyptic dystopian urban beat-’em-ups, heavyweight improvised environmental weaponry (ripping giant steel I-beams, telephone poles, and crushed cars out of the ground), hyper-detailed hand-drawn dieselpunk pixel art, and desperation life-draining super moves—from Metal Slug (created by the exact same Irem development team!), Streets of Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, and Fight’N Rage to modern belt-scrolling brawlers—trace their undisputed royal lineage to Irem’s monumental Undercover Cops (アンダーカバーコップス).

Conceived and directed by legendary designer Kazuma Kujo (creator of Metal Slug and In the Hunt) with breathtaking, hyper-detailed sprite art by Irem’s visionary art team for Irem on the Irem M-92 arcade hardware and Super Famicom, Undercover Cops holds legendary stature: its development team subsequently left Irem to form Nazca Corporation, creating Metal Slug using the exact same art style and animation techniques.

Plattform Context & Gaming Environment: The Year 2043 in Neo New York

Undercover Cops was set in the year 2043 after a catastrophic nuclear World War. In the ruined metropolis of Neo New York, crime syndicates ruled by the mad scientist Dr. Crayborn terrorize the populace. The mayor deploys the City Sweepers—three quasi-vigilante undercover agents (Zan Takahara / Claude, Matt Gables / Bubba, and Rosa Felmonde / Flame) authorized to use lethal force to wipe out the syndicate.

Popularity & Cultural Standing: The Metal Slug Ancestor

Undercover Cops was an enormous critical and arcade sensation in Japan and Europe, celebrated as one of the most visually spectacular, punchy, and satisfying beat-’em-ups ever drawn.

Spillopplevelse Mechanics & Technical Innovations

Undercover Cops delivered heavyweight brawling mechanics:

  • Three Distinct Martial Artists:
    • Claude (Zan): Balanced karate master with flying dragon kicks and energy blasts.
    • Bubba (Matt): Colossal former football player who crushes enemies with power slams and ground smashes!
    • Flame (Rosa): Fast, agile vigilante with acrobatic spinning bladed kicks!
  • Colossal Improvised Weapons: Rip massive steel I-beams, crushed cars, oil drums, and heavy concrete blocks out of the pavement to swat groups of thugs across the screen!
  • Unorthodox Health Recovery: Dig through trash cans and puddles to eat living raw fish, frogs, chicks, and roasted chickens to refill your health bar!
  • Screen-Clearing Desperation Super Attacks: Execute complex motion inputs to unleash screen-shattering ultimate attacks that wipe out entire waves of bosses!

Historical Legacy & Archival Preservation

Undercover Cops is permanently enshrined in Irem and arcade history as the glorious visual and spiritual predecessor to Metal Slug.
