The world of music streaming is getting a bit murky, as evidenced by a recent incident involving acclaimed composer Kumi Tanioka, best known for her work on the beloved Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.
A Case of Mistaken Identity (or Malicious AI?)
Tanioka took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her bewilderment over an album appearing on Spotify under her name, titled “A Village Built on Wind.” The composer is unsure if the EP was created by someone with a similar name or, more disturbingly, generated using artificial intelligence. “This album is definitely not something I made,” she stated plainly.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Tanioka is a verified artist on Spotify, meaning the platform has ostensibly confirmed her authenticity. Despite this verification, the unauthorized EP was still attributed to her within the service.
Digital Sonic Design Weighs In
Digital Sonic Design, a publisher of some of Tanioka’s music, issued a statement clarifying that while the tracks themselves don’t infringe on existing copyrights held by Tanioka, they are potentially misleading to listeners due to the false attribution. The company also highlighted instances on YouTube where similar songs have been explicitly labeled as AI-generated.
The statement concludes with a call for action, suggesting that this incident exposes vulnerabilities in streaming platform security and raises concerns about unauthorized recreations of unreleased tracks being distributed online. This situation underscores the growing need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect artists from exploitation in the age of AI and readily available music creation tools.
