At PAX West, the development team behind Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth offered a deep dive into upcoming features and characters, while also issuing a plea to players: experience the game’s conclusion for yourselves. Don’t rely on others to explain it.

New Characters and Combat Systems

The panel focused heavily on Cid and Vincent, two new playable characters joining the cast in Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.

Development Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Battle Director Teruki Endo walked attendees through the intricacies of the FITS combat system, highlighting its impact on gameplay versatility.

Cid brings a unique aerial combat style to the party, wielding a magical lance that can strike multiple enemies simultaneously. His airborne attacks deal significant damage, making him ideal for long-range engagements. Vincent, on the other hand, excels in mid-range combat with his signature firearm. He also possesses the ability to transform into the Galian Beast, granting him devastating melee capabilities.

The FITS system introduces new traits that dramatically alter a character’s battle style. There are four distinct FITS: Warrior, focused on aggressive offense and expanding character abilities; Knight, designed for defensive support, allowing players to draw enemy attention and protect allies; Black Mage, enabling rapid casting of powerful elemental spells; and Summoner, unlocking powerful Summon Commands for synchronized attacks. Importantly, while the chosen FITS influences a character’s combat style, players retain freedom in selecting their preferred outfit skin.

A Plea to Experience the Ending

As the panel concluded, Hamaguchi addressed the upcoming conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. He emphasized the importance of experiencing the ending firsthand, rather than relying on external explanations or spoilers. “We would love for players to receive [the answers] on their own as their own personal experience,” he stated.

“The reunions we’ve built up throughout the trilogy, the bonds with our companions, and the final resolve. All of this leads to this moment — the third title. We truly hope that you all experience these final moments while carrying in your hearts the journey and the feelings that you’ve built up along the way.”

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series S on April 8, 2027. Mark your calendars – and resist the urge to spoil it for yourselves!
