Exodus: Your Choices Matter – Some Companions Might Not Make It Through the Story!

Get ready to make some tough decisions in Exodus, the upcoming space opera RPG from Archetype Entertainment. With a pedigree that includes key figures from BioWare’s golden age, Exodus is already generating serious hype. And while comparisons to Mass Effect are inevitable, it seems like Exodus is carving out its own unique identity.

Companions: More Than Just Allies

During a recent conversation following my hands-on preview of Exodus, narrative director Drew Karpyshyn (a name familiar to fans of BioWare’s biggest hits) confirmed that the Mass Effect comparison is a fair starting point for understanding what this new game offers. But it’s not just about morality systems and romance options; your choices will have a profound impact on the story’s ending.

Karpyshyn emphasized the importance of making companion relationships feel authentic, stating, “[M]aking their relationship with you grow, allowing it to evolve from the choices you’ve made, and realizing that the choices you make are going to bring some companions closer to you, but maybe push some companions farther away.” This suggests a deeper level of interaction than simply having allies fight alongside you.

The Cost of Choice: Farewell, Friends?

And here’s where things get interesting. Karpyshyn hinted at the potential consequences of your decisions, saying, “Without spoiling too much, we definitely want to have it impact how their storylines go.” He then dropped a bombshell: “Depending on choices you make, by the end of the game, you might not have every companion with you that you started with. That’s about all I can say!”

This isn’t just about companions dying in battle; it suggests that your actions and decisions could lead to permanent rifts within your party. Perhaps some characters will reach a breaking point and leave entirely, or maybe their affinity toward you (or the situations they face) will impact their survival in the end.

Beyond Loyalty Missions: A Dynamic Narrative

The narrative director also spoke about how other in-game events can influence the story’s unfolding. “Even within that optional content,” he explained, “there are choices that will lock or unlock certain things, change the way things play out, change relationships, change characters, change… future… missions…” This paints a picture of a dynamic and reactive world where your actions have far-reaching consequences.

While we’re still waiting to experience Exodus for ourselves, this glimpse into its companion system and narrative structure is incredibly exciting. Get ready to make some tough choices when Exodus launches on April 7, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
