Character creation is a staple of RPGs, and Fable is no exception. But when it comes to showcasing gameplay before launch, developers face choices. At gamescom 2026, Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon, unveiled an extended look at quest gameplay in Albion’s capital, Bowerstone. The player character? A woman we hadn’t seen before. Was this a response to online chatter, or simply a glimpse of the possibilities within Fable’s character creator? I spoke with game director Ralph Fulton.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
“Earlier this year, we obviously revealed that we have some customization in our game,” Fulton explained. “It’s not a revolutionary thing for an RPG to have, but nevertheless, there was some speculation that we didn’t, and we were happy to reveal: Yes, we did.” This seemingly simple statement hints at the depth of control players will have when crafting their hero in Fable.
Fable is slated for release on February 23, 2027, and promises a world where your character’s appearance is entirely up to you. The freedom to create a hero that truly reflects your vision is a core element of the experience.
For those eager to dive deeper, I had the opportunity to provide my impressions of the new quest gameplay and share my thoughts on its combat system after getting hands-on time with it.
The developers are clearly committed to providing players with a robust and versatile character creation suite, allowing for a level of personalization rarely seen in modern RPGs.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the release date!
