As a devoted fan of Stellar Blade, I find it difficult to share this news, but the newly unveiled trailer for the upcoming title Blood Rain—alongside its accompanying key art—appears to be heavily influenced by generative AI.
Critics and fans alike have highlighted a range of inconsistencies, from the uncanny portrayal of the protagonist Evie to bizarre, incongruous architecture depicted in the promotional artwork.
Perhaps the most striking evidence comes from the in‑game environment set in Chongqing. While the developers at Shift Up reportedly visited the city to capture authentic reference material, the signage scattered throughout the game world contains characters that simply do not exist in the local language.
It’s important to remember that Blood Rain is still in its infancy. The issues identified in the trailer and key art could very well be addressed or entirely overhauled before the game’s eventual release, which is expected in a few years.
While the excitement surrounding the upcoming title remains high, it’s worth noting that its visionary lead, Hyung Tae‑Kim, has recently highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.
Addressing Korea’s talent shortage relative to China, Kim remarked that AI could enable a single individual to accomplish the workload of a hundred people. Although the same technology is accessible in China, the implication is that Korea could level the playing field by leveraging AI to boost productivity.
As a devoted fan, I’m inclined to remain optimistic about Stellar Blade, even though its launch is still years away. I understand that Korean developers tend to be more cautious about adopting AI compared to their Western counterparts, and I appreciate the team’s decision to steer clear of the technology for now.
However, the use of generative AI remains controversial. Critics argue that it is trained on vast amounts of human-created content without explicit permission, raising ethical concerns. Additionally, the substantial energy consumption required for training and inference fuels environmental debates surrounding the technology.
From what I understand, the original title never incorporated generative AI, and it remains one of my top picks for the PS5. This demonstrates the studio’s ability to craft compelling experiences without relying on the contentious technology.
