Get ready to wield magic like never before! After a year of anticipation, we’ve finally caught our first glimpse of gameplay from “Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons,” and it looks absolutely captivating. The extended trailer, unveiled during the Gamescom Opening Night Live, showcases the game’s spell-slinging combat system and hints at a rich, dark fantasy world ripe for exploration.
A Fresh Take on D&D
While bearing the “Dungeons & Dragons” moniker, “Warlock” appears to be forging its own path. The trailer emphasizes a focus on spellcasting and strategic combat, moving away from what some might consider a more traditional D&D experience. Players who are expecting a direct adaptation of tabletop rules or those put off by the protagonist Katri’s seemingly endless supply of spells might want to temper their expectations. However, the game’s stunning visuals, fast-paced spell effects, and combat that evokes comparisons to “The Witcher” promise an undeniably thrilling adventure.
The trailer also provided tantalizing details about the game’s setting. “Warlock” follows Katri’s journey through the Domains of Dread in Ravenloft, a realm steeped in gothic horror and perpetual twilight. We caught a glimpse of Darkon, one of the largest and most powerful domains, and we can only hope that the infamous Darklord Azalin makes an appearance.
Initially teased with a stylized heavy metal trailer during the 2025 Game Awards, “Warlock” introduced players to its protagonist, Katri. In a previous interview, developers at Invoke Studios clarified that players will always embody Katri, but will encounter and potentially forge alliances with other characters throughout their journey.
Adding another layer of excitement, Maggie Robertson, the voice actress behind Lady Dimitrescu in “Resident Evil: Village” and Orin the Red in “Baldur’s Gate 3,” is lending her talents to the role of Tasha in “Warlock.” Tasha, also known as Iggwilv, Zybilna, and The Witch Queen, is a legendary figure from D&D lore β the creator of the Feywild realm of Prismeer and one of the most powerful archfey in existence. In “Warlock,” Tasha serves as Katri’s protector, bestowing upon her immense power in exchange for… well, we’re sure there’s a catch.
It’s worth noting that Invoke (formerly Tuque Studios) isn’t entirely new to the world of D&D gaming. They were previously responsible for “D&D: Dark Alliance,” a title that, while not universally acclaimed, demonstrated their commitment to bringing the Forgotten Realms to life.
“Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons” is currently slated for release in 2027. Mark your calendars and prepare to embrace the arcane!
