Discord, the popular communications application long criticized for its heavy resource consumption, is developing a new resource-light “Game Mode” that aims to trim CPU and GPU usage while a game is running. But early details surrounding the feature suggest it will not touch the app’s memory footprint, a gap that has frustrated users who consider RAM usage the platform’s most glaring problem.
The announcement, which surfaced across gaming and tech outlets late last week, describes a mode that “will automatically reduce animations and disable effects when it detects a game being played, freeing up CPU and GPU resources that might help your game run smoother.” The promise aligns with a broader effort to tame the app’s appetite for system resources, though observers have quickly noted what is conspicuously absent from the description.
A Promising Direction, With a Catch
For years, Discord has been a notorious resource hog, and news of a lighter gaming mode is a welcome development for players juggling the app alongside demanding titles. The feature is designed to kick in automatically, detecting when a game is active and dialing back visual flourishes to conserve processing power. In theory, that should translate to smoother frame rates and fewer stutters during peak sessions.
Yet the fine print stops short of the one metric that matters most to many. While CPU and GPU headroom is explicitly called out, there is no specific mention of reducing the app’s memory usage. Given how much RAM Discord can consume, the omission has left some users underwhelmed by the announcement.
Discord is aiming to add more resource-saving features over time.

The Electron Problem
The memory concern runs deeper than a single feature. Discord is built on Electron, a framework for desktop applications that relies on Chromium, the same underlying technology that powers the Chrome browser. Chromium is not exactly renowned for its efficient use of memory, and that architectural foundation is arguably the root of the app’s bloated RAM consumption. Until that foundation is addressed, targeted optimizations like the new Game Mode may only scratch the surface.
This is not the first time Discord has attempted to rein in its memory habits. Late last year, the company introduced measures to address long-standing complaints about excess memory usage. At the time, a Discord representative told users on Reddit that the fix was not intended to be permanent, but the adjustment appears to remain in place to this day.
Notably, the company’s own earlier investigation into Discord’s impact on gaming frame rates concluded that the problem may not have been as severe as some assumed. It is RAM usage, rather than frame-rate degradation, that has proven the more persistent worry for the community.
Looking Ahead
At best, the only nod to broader resource savings comes from a passing comment at the bottom of Discord’s X post on the matter, in which the company said it is “aiming to add more resource-saving features over time.” That phrasing implies the new Game Mode is the first of several planned improvements, with memory reduction potentially on the horizon.
