Thieves made off with two Nvidia-emblazoned trailers belonging to autonomous truck software company PlusAI, only to abandon the cargo a short distance later after discovering the trailers were packed not with high-value electronics but with 40,000 pounds of sand. The brazen theft, which targeted vehicles that were supposed to be parked outside a warehouse half a mile away, unraveled in a manner that has drawn as much amusement as concern through the tech community.
According to reports, the scheme began with an oddly congratulatory message. An executive at PlusAI reportedly received a message from an acquaintance that read, “I have been proud of you for your adventure and success at PlusAI. Just saw two of your trucks near my work place! :)” The message was a dead giveaway: the two trucks referenced were not where they were supposed to be. They were meant to sit outside a warehouse roughly half a mile from the sender’s workplace, not parked near an unrelated location.
How the Theft Unfolded
PlusAI has partnered with Nvidia to develop its autonomous driving technology, and the two trucks in question were emblazoned with the chipmaker’s logo as part of that collaboration. Rather than carrying expensive hardware, however, each trailer was loaded with 20,000 pounds of sand. The cargo was used as a weighted stand-in for a simulation, likely for weight-testing purposes rather than any real equipment transport.
According to the account of events, the thieves forcibly detached the trailers from their tractors and drove off with the cargo. It was only after making off with the load that they realized the trailers contained silica rather than silicon. Rather than keep the haul, they dumped the sand outside the acquaintance’s office, leaving behind a scene that seems more comedic than criminal.

Why Nvidia Branding Made the Target
The appeal of the theft is easy to understand. Any trailer bearing the Nvidia logo would reasonably be assumed to contain valuable electronics, and the green juggernaut has become one of the most valuable companies in the world after becoming the first to reach a trillion-dollar valuation late last year. Nvidia has cashed in heavily on the artificial intelligence boom, and its GPUs power much of the cutting-edge computing driving that growth.
With Nvidia continuing to expand its footprint in the AI and autonomous vehicle sectors, it is entirely plausible that anyone glancing at a Nvidia-labeled truck would assume it carried powerful processors or other expensive equipment. That assumption, in this case, proved to be exactly what the thieves relied on—and exactly what led them astray.

All 40,000 pounds of sand have now been recovered by PlusAI, restoring the cargo that was left behind at the acquaintance’s office. The company has not disclosed further details about its security measures or how the theft may have occurred in the first place.
