In the world of horror games, developers often preach the mantra: “Never show the monster.” But in “The Well Is Not Empty,” tweakEra throws that rule out the window – or rather, plunges you headfirst into it. From the moment you descend into the darkness, you’re confronted with unsettling creatures and a pervasive sense of dread. And trust us, it works.

A Spoonful of Horror

New horror game The Well Is Not Empty combines photophobic monsters with timer light switches and a lot of frenzied digging

Right off the bat, you’re face-to-face with one of the game’s unsettling inhabitants – a scrawny creature with broken teeth and eyes that seem to peer into your very soul. Thankfully, this monster isn’t an immediate threat, as long as you maintain a safe distance and keep the lights on. The catch? Those lights are controlled by timers, forcing you to strategically navigate the environment.

In “The Well Is Not Empty,” available now with
a demo on Steam
, you play as a villager tasked with investigating the sudden disappearance of water. What awaits you below is far more sinister than a simple drought. You’ll encounter abandoned canteens, decaying offices, malfunctioning machinery, and even corpses clutching cryptic letters. The entire area seems to be part of a massive prison complex, not entirely deserted.

Early on, you acquire a rather unconventional weapon: a large spoon. This isn’t just for show; it allows you to dig through loose earth, uncovering hidden passages and rooms. You can also use the spoon to strike objects, creating sparks that briefly illuminate your path. It’s fascinating how such a simple tool can become so integral to both gameplay and character identity.

While the spoon might seem like a novelty item, it hints at a deeper connection between the player and the environment. Right now, the spoon appears limited to digging, but who knows what other “substances” you might be able to excavate? The possibilities are intriguing.

If you’re looking for a horror experience that subverts expectations and embraces the unsettling, “The Well Is Not Empty” is definitely worth checking out. And if you enjoy its unique blend of atmosphere and gameplay, you might also appreciate
