The upcoming “Chartering the Unknown” expansion isn’t just adding new regions and story twists; it’s injecting a massive dose of life sim gameplay that could give The Sims a serious run for its money. Get ready to build, decorate, romance, and maybe even raise a family in this ambitious open-world adventure.
Dive Deep: Underwater Combat and Naval Warfare
Prepare for some truly bizarre (and awesome) gameplay additions! “Chartering the Unknown” promises underwater combat where you’ll pilot submarines, ride sharks (yes, really!), and use a jetpack to explore the vibrant ocean depths. And if that wasn’t enough, get ready for Assassin’s Creed-esque naval battles! The trailer showcases giant underwater dragons and hints at a new narrative threat lurking in an unexplored region far beyond the familiar Crimson Desert landscape.
Expect a brand new region dominated by a massive body of water, complete with a city where oppressed workers are on the verge of rebellion. It’s all wonderfully chaotic and unpredictable, perfectly embodying the spirit of Crimson Desert.
Build Your Dream Castle (and Maybe Find Love!)
One of the most exciting additions is the ability to construct your own buildings and customize them to your heart’s content. The trailer focuses on building a massive castle outside the city, showing its evolution from a simple foundation to a formidable stone fortress. There’s even scaffolding, suggesting you might be able to climb buildings during construction or even help with the assembly!
But it doesn’t stop there! The trailer then transitions to the interior of a different building, where the player uses an interface strikingly similar to those found in The Sims or Paralives. You can place walls, arrange furniture, and create your perfect living space. This isn’t just an open-world action-adventure game anymore; it’s a borderline life sim where you can build a home and start a romance with one of the many NPCs.
Towards the end of the trailer, we see protagonist Kliff Macduff getting down on one knee and presenting a bouquet of flowers to an NPC, strongly suggesting that more robust romance options are coming to Crimson Desert. If you’re adding all the other ingredients of a life sim, it only makes sense to let our hero find love and settle down!
Hire Employees, Defend Your Castle, and Assemble a Crew!
The expansion also introduces the ability to hire employees, each with different stats and roles. You might need someone skilled in running the castle kitchen or a charismatic individual to act as your traveling merchant. The presence of attack and defense stats suggests you’ll eventually have to defend your castle from outside forces. It wouldn’t be surprising if pirate ships require players to assemble their own crew, either drawn from your castle staff or recruited elsewhere.
The “Chartering the Unknown” expansion follows a series of free updates that have dramatically transformed the ambitious open-world game since its release earlier this year. The most recent patch added several narrative-focused cutscenes to what was once a relatively lightweight main story.
