The collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix that brought us the incredibly popular Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover set isn’t over yet. While the initial release was a smash hit, it seems both companies are keen to keep the magic (pun intended) alive well into 2027.
A New Chapter for FFVII
During Sony’s State of Play presentation, an extended gameplay trailer showcased Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the concluding chapter in Square Enix’s ambitious FFVII remake trilogy. The publisher officially announced that the game will be released on April 8, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. But the biggest news for Magic fans was the preorder bonus: a foil promo card featuring Cloud Strife locked in combat with Sephiroth.
This special-edition physical copy will be available through participating retailers, and supplies are expected to be limited. This is a fantastic opportunity for both Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts to own a piece of gaming history.
The Power of Final Showdown
The promo card itself is a reprint of Final Showdown, a versatile white instant that originally debuted in 2024’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Its unique “spree” mechanic allows players to pay for any combination of three powerful effects: stripping creatures of their abilities, granting indestructible to a creature, or destroying all creatures on the battlefield. This makes it an incredibly flexible board wipe, capable of protecting key pieces for just two mana or wiping the entire board at instant speed for six. Paying eight mana activates all three modes sequentially, removing troublesome abilities before making one creature indestructible and then destroying everything else.
While the original Final Showdown features a lone gunslinger, the Final Fantasy reprint boasts stunning new artwork by Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura. This visual upgrade perfectly captures the epic scale and iconic imagery of the FFVII universe.
A Pattern Emerges
This isn’s the first time Square Enix has sweetened video game preorders with Magic cards. Physical Nintendo Switch 2 copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in June, included a full-art foil Zack Fair promo also designed by Nomura. Furthermore, Wizards of the Coast released a wave of Final Fantasy-themed products after the initial release. In December 2025, they unleashed four Scene Boxes recreating memorable moments from various Final Fantasy titles, and a Chocobo Bundle packed with themed lands and alternate-art cards.
During an interview at MagicCon: Las Vegas in May, Magic principal designer Gavin Verhey acknowledged that even the massive original set couldn’t cover everything. “We could have made a 2,000-card set and still not covered all the things players wanted to see,” he said. He also expressed enthusiasm for potentially returning to the franchise, highlighting the vast untapped potential within the Final Fantasy universe.
While another Final Fantasy set isn’t officially confirmed, the pattern of supplemental releases is becoming increasingly clear. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation still seven months away, it’s entirely possible that Wizards and Square Enix have even more surprises in store for fans. Keep your eyes peeled – this collaboration is far from over!
