Get ready to sharpen your Great Swords and charge your Charge Blades! Capcom has quietly begun releasing a series of trailers showcasing the upcoming “Ascendance” DLC for Monster Hunter Wilds. These videos aren’t just pretty eye candy; they offer a deep dive into how each of the game’s 14 weapon types will be evolving, introducing a brand-new gameplay mechanic that promises to shake up your hunts.
A New Era of Hunting: Introducing “Boosted Actions”
The first trailer, dedicated to the iconic Great Sword, introduces “Boosted Actions,” a new modifier system available for all weapons. As Capcom explains, “Ascend to Master Rank with the Boost Bracer, a new hunting action that expands the abilities of each of the 14 weapon types in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance.” The publisher plans to release one video per day, leading up to Tokyo Game Show on September
. This means we’re getting a steady stream of information about how each weapon will be transformed.
So, what exactly are these “Boosted Actions”? Essentially, they allow you to unleash enhanced abilities and attacks by building up energy through aggressive play. You can activate Boost with a special “Boost Driver” attack or other unique actions specific to each weapon. This unlocks new combos, powerful attacks, and ultimately gives you more control over the battlefield.
For Great Sword users, this translates into moves like:
- Flinging forward with the Boost Driver.
- Unleashing explosive charged slashes.
- Chaining together offset attacks.
The video above provides a detailed breakdown of how these actions work in practice. It appears there are three main ways to enter “Boosted” mode: through a slow but powerful Brace Boost move, by switching into stance with “Quick Boost,” and by comboing into “Boosted” with specific attack sequences. This new resource system will undoubtedly add another layer of depth to combat encounters.
The trailers offer glimpses of exciting changes for all weapon types. The Hammer looks incredibly satisfying, with moves that seem to facilitate easier perfect guarding, opening up a more aggressive playstyle (resulting in what appears to be a Hammer-based shoryuken!). The Charge Blade boasts a “counter hadoken,” and the Great Sword gains versatility with a brand-new aerial moveset.
To put it simply: I’m incredibly excited. Capcom seems determined to encourage faster, more offensive playstyles, likely because the monsters we’re about to face will be equally aggressive. Given the
that plagued the game at launch, this change is likely to be welcomed by the community.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. A Switch 2 version is in development. The Ascendance DLC is slated for release in 2027.
