The galaxy far, far away just got a little less chaotic. In a move that will undoubtedly send ripples through the competitive Star Wars Unlimited scene, Lucasfilm Games has announced the suspension of Cad Bane: Still Faster Than You from Premier play. This aggressive villain leader, introduced in the Ashes of the Empire expansion, proved to be too powerful for its own good, warping the metagame and dominating tournaments.
The Rise and Fall of a Villain
Cad Bane’s ability to quickly eliminate enemies and units made him an incredibly potent force in the early game. However, as matches progressed, his sheer power became overwhelming, leading to frustration for players facing him. Game developer Ryan Miles addressed the issue on the official Unlimited website, explaining the reasons behind the ban.
“The data behind Cad Bane is extremely clear: the leader is a power outlier through and through, and he warps the entire metagame around him while still putting up dominant win rates,” Miles wrote. This sentiment was echoed throughout the community, with players acknowledging Cad’s strength but lamenting his impact on deckbuilding diversity.
Cad Bane quickly became a staple in Premier decks, appearing in numerous winning strategies and even featured prominently in the Galactic Championship held in Las Vegas last month. His presence also dominated other Unlimited Sector Qualifiers following the championship. Now, with this ban, Cad’s reign of terror (or triumph, depending on your perspective) is officially over.
A Necessary Evil for a Healthier Meta?
Miles explained that previous card suspensions in Unlimited, such as War Juggernaut, stemmed from interactions between new cards and existing ones, leading to unforeseen power increases. In Cad’s case, his dominance was immediate, slipping through the pre-production checks due to what Miles termed a “development mistake.”
“While there are many moving parts that led to Cad Bane ending up the way he did, the shortest explanation is simply that we did not identify him as the best-performing leader in the Aggression-Vigilance-Villainy shell, and felt he had exploitable weaknesses in the control-focused mirror matches,” Miles explained. “During playtesting, we failed to optimize our more aggressive strategies that could push out our greedier control decks, which ultimately gave us a bad read on the eventual metagame, and a perfect environment for Cad Bane to thrive.”
This isn’t the first time a card has been banned from Unlimited’s Premier format. Bob Fett: Collecting a Bounty was also suspended in 2024 due to its overwhelming presence (around 40% of Top 8 finishers) in sector qualifiers. Other cards, like Jango Fett: Concealing the Conspiracy and Han Solo: Audacious Smuggler, have also faced similar fates. Cad’s inclusion in this list highlights just how significant his impact was – Miles noted that he was effectively keeping “an untold number of decks almost entirely out of the meta.”
While players can still enjoy Cad Bane in other formats like Eternals and Twin Suns, competitive Unlimited players will have to find new strategies. While this ban might sting for those who built their decks around him, it’s a necessary step towards creating a more balanced and diverse metagame. Only time will tell if this sacrifice leads to a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all.
