Breath of the Wild’s New Vinyl Box Set Is an Amazing Addition to My Zelda Collection

Hyrule’s Soundtrack Comes to Life: A Deep Dive into Breath of the Wild’s Vinyl Box Set

For a gamer like me, The Legend of Zelda isn’t just a series; it’s an experience woven with unforgettable music. From the official soundtracks on the Nintendo Music app to inspired fan remixes (like Mikel’s incredible “Zelda & Chill” trilogy Zelda & Chill trilogy of albums), and even learning to play those iconic themes on piano, Hyrule’s melodies are a constant in my life.

A Soundtrack Reimagined

While I appreciate the bombastic overworld themes of classic Zeldas like Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker, it’s Breath of the Wild’s score that truly captivated me. Its minimalist approach, largely abandoning traditional fanfare for soft, ambient keystrokes, perfectly complements Link’s solitary journey. This unique shift makes Breath of the Wild’s soundtrack somewhat underrated, despite its moments of sweeping orchestral brilliance during boss battles and key story beats.

With enough music to fill eight double-sided LPs, Nintendo partnered with video game record label Laced Records to release Breath of the Wild’s soundtrack on vinyl. This is a monumental achievement, marking the first Nintendo soundtrack released on vinyl outside of Japan. IGN generously provided me with a copy of the 8LP box set, and I’m incredibly impressed by how closely the quality and attention to detail match the game itself.

While not an audiophile, I appreciate the physicality of vinyl records. This Breath of the Wild box set is already a favorite in my collection, which includes the Ace Attorney box set and soundtracks from games like Celeste and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The packaging is stunning: the inner cardboard slipcase reveals eight LPs nestled in a triangular sleeve featuring Link climbing a mountain as the sun sets over Hyrule.

Each disc features key art, and while familiar to Breath of the Wild fans, their painterly style remains captivating. While I typically prefer standard black vinyl, the blue and gold splatter on these discs is visually appealing. The real magic lies in how Nintendo curated each disc. Disc 2’s A-side focuses on overworld themes, while its B-side features combat music. There are entire discs dedicated to the Divine Beast questlines, each champion’s region, and even Kass’s accordion melodies.

The artwork on each sleeve complements its theme, creating a cohesive listening experience. This thoughtful arrangement has deepened my appreciation for the soundtrack, allowing me to relive my time in Hyrule in a new way. Thankfully, the discs were pristine, with minimal surface noise.

I’m so impressed that I immediately pre-ordered another copy for myself (the provided copy is heading to IGN’s office). This is truly an enthusiast item, priced at $194.99, and all the music is available on Nintendo’s streaming app. However, it’s a must-have for any Zelda fan. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, the double vinyl release, selling for $49.99, is likely excellent as well. My hope now is that Nintendo and Laced Records will collaborate on a Tears of the Kingdom version, as that soundtrack holds a special place in my heart.
