A Bloomberg report has confirmed that Rockstar Παιχνίδια originally envisioned Grand Theft Αυτόματο VI as a game spanning “big swaths of land across both North and South America,” validating one of the most widely mocked rumors surrounding the title.
The concept, reportedly codenamed “Project Americas” as far back as 2015, would have seen players exploring multiple cities rather than the single setting—Leonida—that the game ultimately features. The confirmation marks a notable exception among the many unfounded GTA 6 rumors that proliferated during the years before its official reveal.

Before Grand Theft Αυτόματο VI was properly revealed in 2023, fans were desperate for any information about the game. Perhaps fueled by COVID-induced boredom, 2020 and 2021 were a hotbed for rumors. Leaks became currency on sites like Reddit, where so-called insiders seemed to have a hot new detail every day.
One week, it was that the game would feature seasonal map changes, a la Fortnite. Next, it was that it would feature cryptocurrency. Every once and while, someone would chime in and claim Dr. Dre would be in the game. Some rumors sounded plausible, while others read like absurd fan fiction from people who were setting themselves up for a colossal disappointment.
The most rumored concept was that Grand Theft Αυτόματο VI would break from the series’ established trend of one city per installment by spreading its map across multiple American locations. Supposed leakers emerged to add fuel to the theory, with regular “map leaks” suggesting players would visit Rockstar’s take on Cuba. People began investigating domain registrations to figure out which cities the game would feature.
For a good year, a large part of the internet believed that Project Americas was real. The concept felt vindicated when the studio got its first look at Grand Theft Αυτόματο VI in 2023, confirming one setting—Leonida—and allowing years of imaginative rumors to be put to bed.
The Bloomberg report confirms those Project Americas rumors didn’t come out of thin air—they actually were the vision for the game at some point, though it’s not clear when exactly those plans shifted. In detailing Grand Theft Αυτόματο VI’s arduous development cycle, the report notes that Rockstar had trouble nailing down a vision for the game, something that led to its two notorious delays.
The studio has revealed a cast so far described as pretty stacked, leaving some wondering whether rumored figures like Dr. Dre might still be involved in ways players don’t yet know.
Once Nov. 19 comes around, we’ll finally put that long history to bed. The good news for sentimental fans? You can count on that cycle beginning anew once Grand Theft Αυτόματο VII hype begins on Nov. 20.
