Blood Dungeon Is Vampire Survivors with more blood and full-frontal nudity

Let’s cut to the chase: Blood Dungeon is a two-word review waiting to happen. Just type “Blood Dungeon” into your search engine, hit enter, and boom – you already know what you’re getting. Developer Messhof, known for Nidhogg and , delivers exactly what the title promises: a low-fi, unapologetically crude take on Vampire Survivors.

A Glorious Mess

Blood Dungeon is essentially Vampire Survivors remade by a 12-year-old armed with Microsoft Paint. Forget Poncle’s retro pixel art; here, we have misshapen doodles colored in with magic markers. Splotchy blue birds and disembodied hands roam arenas that resemble texture stamps. It’s like discovering your kid’s math notebook reveals a shocking lack of attention. This gleeful immaturity is what makes Blood Dungeon so charming.

Gameplay: More Blood, Less Brain

The gameplay follows Vampire Survivors’ basic rules. You pick a misfit character (the Skinja, moving by cartwheeling, is my favorite), who has their own starting weapon and perk. You move around levels as your weapon auto-fires at enemies, picking up upgrades to level up. Blood Dungeon is a DPS arms race, even more than Vampire Survivors, emphasizing raw power over complex builds. While this limits build variety, it also allows for those satisfying “aha!” moments. My best run involved focusing on upgrades that reduced weapon cooldowns when I was full health and standing in a spawned circle, allowing me to obliterate bosses before they even appeared.

High Scores and Toxic Friendships

Blood Dungeon is all about chasing high scores. Beating a level is fun, but obliterating your friends’ scores and rubbing it in their faces is the real reward. I became competitive (okay, toxic) during my few weeks with it, sending screenshots of my scores to friends who were also reviewing it.

A Faster Pace, A More Addictive Loop

Unlike Vampire Survivors’ slower pace, Blood Dungeon escalates quickly and has multi-tiered victories, making even bad runs feel worthwhile. The goal is to survive long enough to beat three bosses, but you unlock new stages by beating just the first. Every achievement after that is about chasing unlocks and bragging rights.

The Verdict: Embrace the Chaos

Blood Dungeon isn’t a revolutionary take on Vampire Survivors, but it’s a shallow riff on the formula. There are limited levels and at least one is a dud (fighting enemies underwater while grabbing oxygen bubbles? No thanks!). It feels like a prototype for a bigger idea, a Hail Mary by Messhof. But if you see the name Blood Dungeon and think, “hell yeah,” then this game is for you.

Blood Dungeon will be released Aug. 25 on Switch, PC, and Xbox Series X. It was reviewed on PC using a prerelease download code provided by Messhof. You can find additional information about Polygon’s ethics policy here.
