The rapid escalation of demand represents a significant challenge for the developer, which had hoped to offer a smoother beta experience. Players who attempted to join the test build found themselves turned away or stuck in extended queues as server capacity was pushed beyond its initial limits. Blizzard’s quick succession of adjustments signals that the studio did not anticipate this level of enthusiasm, even for one of gaming’s most enduring franchises.

A Second Cap Increase

Over the weekend, World of Warcraft executive producer Holly Londale announced on X that the team “had to increase the WoW: Forever Beta population cap again,” adding that “the wild ride continues.” This adjustment raises the number of players who can access the game simultaneously. As alluded to in her post, this is already the second time Blizzard has raised the cap since the beta launched on September 17, indicating sustained and growing demand rather than a one-time surge.

The response has been described as extreme even by the standards of a game that has remained continuously relevant for nearly two decades. The day after the beta’s release, developer Josh Greenfield posted that Forever had “the craziest numbers I’ve seen in 17 years working at Blizzard.” Because the title has not yet been fully released to the general public, those figures serve as an encouraging indicator of its long-term potential.

Redefining Classic WoW

In simple terms, World of Warcraft Forever is a “Classic plus” version of the MMO. It represents the third iteration of the game and will run alongside retail, which receives the latest expansions, and Classic, a vanilla experience that progresses through the game’s past expansions over time. Forever will be set during the first year of vanilla World of Warcraft but will introduce changes to the original experience, distinguishing it from Classic’s more faithful recreation.

The title features a level 60 cap and introduces three entirely new zones unseen in WoW’s initial launch. Existing zones have been overhauled to include more than 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids, and a brand-new race known as the Skyborne Elves. These additions aim to breathe fresh life into the classic experience while preserving its nostalgic appeal.

Release Window and Pricing

The game remains in beta through October 21 before being released in its complete state on November 4. Forever will be included in the standard World of Warcraft subscription, though the Skyborne Elves race will require a separate purchase priced at $29.99. This pricing structure allows players to access the core experience through their existing subscription while offering an optional cosmetic and gameplay addition for those interested.

With full release just weeks away, Blizzard now faces the challenge of maintaining server stability as interest continues to build toward November 4. The studio’s willingness to repeatedly expand capacity suggests confidence that demand will only grow once the game reaches its complete state. As one of the most anticipated iterations in WoW’s history, Forever appears poised to draw both longtime veterans and new players into Azeroth.
