Anthony Mackie has opened up about the deeply personal moment when Chris Evans revealed that he would be taking over as Captain America, sharing how his predecessor chose to break the news during a quiet visit at his home in the early days of filming Avengers: Endgame. The revelation came not through a public announcement or behind-the-scenes celebration, but through an intimate conversation between two friends who share one of the most defining character handoffs in modern cinema history.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay and former Falcon actor recounted the story while speaking with Cigar Aficionado, as reported by Variety. Rather than a scripted press moment or marketing reveal, Mackie said he discovered his new role during a private exchange that underscored the genuine bond between the two actors who have both brought versions of America’s iconic superhero to life.

A Private Moment Between Friends

Mackie described how Evans, as the sitting Captain America, received script pages before anyone else on production. During one such moment at his house, Evans simply asked whether Mackie had read a new scene, then handed over the material that would change everything.

“Chris Evans is somebody who I hold near and dear,” he said. “We’re at Chris’ house, and because he’s Captain America, he gets the script pages first. So he’s like, ‘Yo, did you read the new scene?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, what’s up?’ So, he takes me down…and he gave me the script and let me read it.”

14. Secret Invasion<p>

Just dreadful. It's such a shame that we waited so long for Nick Fury to get the spotlight, one even based on a famous comic arc, and it turned out so terribly. Nothing on paper was bad about this, mind you, but now Secret Invasion stands as the only canon series that Marvel fans would happily ignore. What's that you say? Maria Hill's still alive? Great. What else? Rhodey wasn't a Skrull during Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame? Perfect. What else? G'iah doesn't now have the combined powers of The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Captain Marvel making her the most powerful being on Earth? Fantastic! Yup, if there was a Roger Rabbit-style 'Dip' that could erase Secret Invasion from existence, we'd happily fill our super-soakers. <br><br>

Note: Since Secret Invasion, the MCU has introduced two more impossibly-powerful characters in Sentry and Franklin Richards. The difference with them though is that there are clear plans for them in the next Avengers movie (and Sentry comes with a failsafe, of sorts). G'iah absorbing the Harvest felt like Secret Invasion writing checks that the MCU had no intention of cashing.

The actor reflected on how rare such gestures are in an industry often defined by competition. He noted that very few actors would celebrate a moment like this, especially knowing they were effectively taking over his role.

“And it was really great and really emotional to learn it from a friend…I don’t know a lot of actors who would have appreciated or celebrated that moment with a fellow actor in that way because I was taking his job for all intents and purposes.”

The End of an Eight-Year Arc

Evans’ departure as Captain America concluded a monumental eight-year run that saw his Steve Rogers appear in three standalone films, numerous team-up movies, and several memorable cameos. He cemented himself as the most recognizable incarnation of the character, delivering fan-favorite stories still celebrated today as some of the best the MCU has to offer.

Saying Evans stepping away represented a massive shift for Franchise is an understatement. Mackie adopted the role in Endgame’s closing moments, watching an aged Steve Rogers hand over his iconic shield. Yet he insists that his friendship with Evans meant he understood how to fill the mantle long before the rest of the world—and much of the cast and crew—knew what was coming.

13. Captain America: Brave New World<p>

It's important to recognize the huge gap in quality between Brave New World and Secret Invasion. Even though this Captain America movie is ranked second-to-last, there's a gulf between these two Phase Five-ers.<br><br>

Brave New World is just a regular misfire, with some decent elements. Like you'd hope for most of the time for things that miss the mark. The biggest issue with Brave New World is that Sam's major arc and best character moments happened on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Brave New World was actually a President Ross story (making it even sadder that William Hurt didn't get to play the role). Ross had the emotional journey here whereas Sam was relegated to just being a guy who went from not wanting to reform the Avengers to a guy who agrees to reform the Avengers. It's also clear from the film itself that Red Hulk was meant to be a a third act surprise, and that the audience was suppose to be guessing at Samuel Sterns' plan (with those having read the comics in a better position to predict correctly). Marketing, however, went all in on Red Hulk. So much so you'd assume he came in the middle of the movie and not during the final 10 minutes.<br><br>

Reshoots don't mean a movie will be bad. Neither does a script still being written during filming. Good movies come from these conditions all the time. But when a film flops it's easy to look at a messy production like Brave New World (cut storylines, characters, etc) and see why it felt so half-formed. <br><br>

That being said, it was pretty awesome to get Tim Blake Nelson back as Sterns as he was the original 'oh they'll never pay this off' MCU loose end.

Mackie’s Journey as Captain America

The actor went on to portray Sam Wilson in Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, his first foray into the role. His debut standalone film came last year with Captain America: Brave New World, further establishing him as a capable successor to one of cinema’s most beloved heroes.

Audiences will see both Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Evans’ Steve Rogers return to the MCU when Avengers: Doomsday premieres December 18, 2026. Fans who attended theaters to watch Avengers: Endgame Encore this past weekend received a sneak peek at what awaits, thanks to a small collection of new scenes included in the re-release.

Looking Ahead

As the MCU moves into its next major phase, Mackie’s Captain America stands ready to carry forward the legacy established by Evans. With Doomsday on the horizon and the emotional foundation laid during that private moment at Evans’ home, fans have every reason to be excited about what lies ahead for Sam Wilson as he continues shaping his own path as Earth’s Super Soldier.
