The BBC has unveiled its first look at a new animated spinoff of Doctor Who, introducing “Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew,” a preschool-oriented series designed to bring the Whoniverse to younger viewers. Announced this week, the show will premiere on British broadcast channel CBeebies and stream via BBC iPlayer, with production underway at Blue Zoo Animation Studio under series director Dominic Minns.

The announcement arrives during an uncertain period for the long-running sci-fi franchise, as its live-action flagship enters a transitional phase. The new animated project represents a distinct creative direction: shorter episodes aimed at early viewers rather than the family audience of the mainline broadcasts.

A Preschool-Friendly Journey Through Time and Space

According to the BBC’s press release, the series follows “the Doctor, a young Time Lord, and his friends Hannah, Beastie, and Toast-IE” as they embark on adventures through time and space aboard the iconic TARDIS. Along the way, the characters encounter new creatures, discover unfamiliar worlds, and come face-to-face with legendary foes including the Daleks.

The show will be delivered in 52 eleven-minute episodes, a format tailored to shorter attention spans while preserving the “wonder and excitement” of Doctor Who. The BBC described the project as combining that sense of adventure with what it called the “trusted storytelling and learning through play values of CBeebies.” In its own description, the series said it celebrates curiosity, courage, and kindness while encouraging young viewers to explore new ideas, solve problems, and embrace the unexpected.

“Bursting with imagination, humor, and adventure, Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew brings the excitement of the Whoniverse to a new generation of fans.”

The BBC shared its first look at the series’ art style through an accompanying screenshot, offering viewers their initial glimpse of how these characters will be rendered in animation.

A New Chapter for Mainline Doctor Who

The animated reveal comes as the latest run of Doctor Who was reportedly canceled last year. Ncuti Gatwa portrayed the fifteenth incarnation of the Doctor from 2023 to 2025. Across the show’s history, fourteen actors have taken on the role — David Tennant doing so twice — as a Time Lord who regenerates into a new body when near death.

The franchise also navigated significant corporate upheaval after Disney ended its partnership with the show in late 2025, reportedly citing large budgets and poor ratings. Some insiders claimed that Disney leadership considered the series “too woke” for American audiences under President Donald Trump, a characterization that drew criticism as the party’s approval ratings declined.

The BBC provided its most detailed update on June 10, 2026, confirming that the planned Christmas special had been scrapped so the production could focus on setting up the next incarnation. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series,” the statement read, adding that the network chose to invest in the long-term future of the show rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special.

Looking Ahead

In its most consequential move, the BBC revealed that the mainline series was “being put out to competitive tender,” allowing multiple production companies to pitch new creative directions. The announcement coincided with the departure of former showrunner Russell T Davies and his production company Bad Wolf.

While Doctor Who has historically featured long gaps between seasons, it had maintained a steady rhythm since its 2005 revival. That consistency is now set to end, with the competitive tender process expected to span several years — meaning no new season will arrive until mid-2028 at the earliest. Submissions for the tender closed on October 1.

The animated spinoff offers a rare bright spot during this period of uncertainty. With Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew slated to arrive in late 2027 or early 2028, the BBC appears determined to keep the brand alive for its next generation of fans even as it reworks the flagship series from the ground up.
