The debate around Artificial Intelligence (AI) in game development is heating up faster than a freshly brewed cup of coffee, and for good reason. While the potential benefits are undeniable – from streamlining workflows to creating more dynamic experiences – concerns about its environmental impact and ethical implications are equally valid. At Gamescom 2026, we sat down with Tim Willits, CCO at Saber Interactive, to get his perspective on this complex issue.
The Environmental Elephant in the Room
Willits acknowledged the growing anxieties surrounding AI’s carbon footprint. “Personally,” he confessed, “I find myself thinking about the environmental cost every time I use a search engine or ask an AI-powered assistant a question. It’s a real issue that we, as a society, need to address.” He pointed to recent global disasters as stark reminders of humanity’s impact on the planet.
Thinking Outside the Box (and the Planet)
When asked about potential solutions, Willits offered a thought-provoking suggestion inspired by none other than Elon Musk. “Elon’s idea of putting servers in space is intriguing,” he mused. “Starlink offers incredible bandwidth, and frankly, I’m willing to tolerate a slight delay if it means reducing our reliance on energy-intensive data centers here on Earth.”
AI Controversy at Saber Interactive
Saber Interactive has recently faced scrutiny for its use of AI in the upcoming title, Rideshare Stimulator. One former writer alleged that she was replaced by an AI system, a claim that Saber denied. However, the studio maintains that it is “firm believers in using AI tools to improve or enhance gameplay experiences.” This stance highlights the ongoing tension between innovation and ethical considerations within the industry.
