In a move that’s sending ripples of excitement through the gaming world, a new studio called Black Pony Immersive has emerged, spearheaded by industry legends Harvey Smith and Ben Horne. This isn’t just another studio launch; it’s a declaration of intent to keep the immersive sim genre alive and kicking, even as many believe it’s too risky in today’s market. With a pedigree that includes Deus Ex, Dishonored, Prey, and Thief: Deadly Shadows, Black Pony Immersive is poised to make a significant impact.
A Dream Team Assembles
Harvey Smith and Ben Horne, both formerly of Arkane Austin, are the driving forces behind Black Pony Immersive. Their journey together at Arkane culminated in the somewhat underwhelming Redfall, but before that, they were instrumental in creating some of the most beloved immersive sims of all time. The team also includes Ricardo Bare, a Deus Ex designer, adding even more weight to their impressive roster. While the pair worked together until Microsoft’s decision to close Arkane Austin, they have been secretly working on Black Pony since August 2025.

Defending the Immersive Sim
Speaking with The Game Business, Smith and Horne passionately defended their decision to focus on immersive sims in 2026. They argued that games like Dishonored were financially successful, and that their collective experience provides a solid foundation for success. Smith pointed out that declaring a genre “dead” often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that studios chasing fleeting trends are more likely to fail. As an independent studio, Black Pony Immersive has the freedom to pursue its vision without the pressures of corporate expectations. “We don’t have to seek much approval from anyone else, and that makes us very nimble,” Smith told GamesIndustry.
A Bold Gamble in Uncertain Times
Describing the current gaming landscape as “the worst time in history” to start a studio, Smith explained why they’re taking this bold step. He believes that when things are going well, there’s less incentive to take risks. Black Pony Immersive currently has a team of 26 full-time employees, many of whom previously worked at Arkane, but also includes fresh talent. While details about their first game remain under wraps, it’s confirmed to be an immersive sim, and the industry is eagerly awaiting its announcement.
In a gaming world often dominated by sequels and established franchises, Black Pony Immersive represents a beacon of hope for innovation and creativity. With a team boasting decades of experience and a clear vision, they have the potential to not only revive the immersive sim genre but also redefine what it means to be a successful independent game studio.
