The gaming industry is facing a stark reality check. New data from Circana, a leading market analysis firm, reveals that consumer spending on gaming hardware and software in the US plummeted during July, hitting levels not seen since the height of the 2020 pandemic when supply chain issues plagued the entire industry. This isn’t just a minor dip; it’s a significant trend that raises serious questions about the current state of the market.
Console Sales Hit Rock Bottom
The report highlights a dramatic decline in console sales across all platforms. Hardware spending dropped by an alarming 29 percent compared to July of last year. This isn’t just a slight correction; it represents a massive contraction in consumer demand. What’s even more concerning is that this level of hardware spending mirrors the conditions of July 2020, when consoles were notoriously difficult to find due to global component shortages. It seems that high prices are now achieving the same effect as outright unavailability.
Physical Game Sales Reach All-Time Low
The downturn extends beyond consoles. Physical software sales also experienced a historic collapse. New physical game sales reached an all-time low, a figure not seen since tracking began back in 1995. This indicates that consumers are either shifting to digital distribution or simply holding onto their existing games for longer periods.
Interestingly, the report reveals that PlayStation accounts for 32 percent of spending on new physical games year-to-date, while Nintendo holds a significant 63 percent share. This is particularly noteworthy in light of Sony’s recent announcement to discontinue physical disc manufacturing for PlayStation starting January 2028.
Top Sellers and Emerging Trends
Despite the overall decline, some titles managed to stand out. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, recently ported to PS4 and PS5, topped the charts in July. The original Black Ops, released alongside the port as part of a bundle, secured the fifth spot. This is hardly surprising, considering that these two ports are estimated to have sold a combined total of 11 million copies.

Halo: Campaign Evolved, while a solid performer, clearly struggled to reach the sales volume achieved by the Black Ops ports. Other notable releases in the top 10 included Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Splatoon Raiders and EA Sports College Football 27.
Overall Spending and Subscription Services
The overall spending across games, hardware, and accessories combined dropped by 10 percent in July compared to the previous year. This decline was driven by contractions in all segments – PC, consoles, and mobile gaming. The only category that bucked this trend was subscription services, which experienced a modest increase of 6 percent.
This data paints a clear picture: console owners are being cautious with their spending, seemingly opting to continue playing existing games rather than investing in new hardware or software. The rise of subscription services suggests that consumers are seeking more affordable ways to access gaming content, even as the market grapples with high prices and economic uncertainty.
