Miyazaki Clarifies “PvPvE” Label for The Duskbloods, Explains Design Philosophy

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the visionary director behind FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed titles, recently shed light on the initial perception of The Duskbloods, slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in late 2025. While the game was initially described as a “PvPvE” title, Miyazaki explained to GameSpot that this label might have inadvertently misled players about the core gameplay experience.

Understanding The Duskbloods: Beyond the Label

The term “PvPvE” often conjures images of extraction shooters, a genre The Duskbloods actively avoids. Miyazaki emphasized that the game’s design philosophy extends far beyond this narrow categorization. He explained that the initial description was intended to highlight certain elements but ultimately fell short of capturing the full scope of the experience.

“The PvPvE label is a little confusing in the context of this game,” Miyazaki stated through a translator. “We had key goals: The Sigil and Event system to create constant drama and excitement between players, and the Virtue system to foster relationships. It’s not purely PvP; there are ways to win and enjoy matches outside direct player conflict. Saying it was a PvPvE game made it seem like that was all there was, and saying it’s a PvE game doesn’t do it justice. It’s a combination of both.” He further elaborated that the enemy designs draw inspiration from previous FromSoftware titles, seamlessly integrated into the gameplay.

Miyazaki acknowledged the potential for misinterpretation following the initial announcement. “When we announced it as a PvPvE title, there was probably confusion thinking it was like an extraction game. We definitely look back at that now and think, ‘Hmm, maybe that wasn’t the best way to refer to it.’ It doesn’t do the game justice.”

FromSoftware’s Foray into Online Multiplayer: A Legacy of Innovation

This isn’t FromSoftware’s first venture into focused online multiplayer. Last year, the studio launched Elden Ring Nightreign, a roguelike twist on the souls-like formula that challenged groups of players to survive and thrive as darkness encroached upon them. This experience undoubtedly informed the development of The Duskbloods.

With Miyazaki’s clarification, anticipation for The Duskbloods continues to build. Players can now approach the game with a clearer understanding of its design philosophy, eager to experience the unique blend of PvP and PvE elements that FromSoftware has crafted for the Nintendo Switch 2.
