Rockstar Games has pulled back the curtain on its long-awaited GTA 6, unveiling a flood of new details in an extensive feature published today by Game Informer. The coverage sheds light on the studio’s ambitious weather systems, the wildlife and non-player characters that populate its world, and the sheer scope of the game’s map, which the studio confirms is twice the size of its 2013 predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V. Set in the fictionalized state of Leonida, a stand-in for Florida, the upcoming title arrives amid some of the highest expectations in gaming history, and Rockstar says it intends to meet them head-on.

Among the most eagerly anticipated confirmations is that hurricanes will appear in the game, one of the most speculated elements of the project since fans first glimpsed the map. Given the intensity of real-world Florida storms, many observers had questioned whether the phenomenon was technically feasible. Rockstar confirmed the storms will be featured but declined to say how often they will occur or whether they will factor into the story.

A Weather System Re-Engineered from the Ground Up

Rockstar’s vice president of lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, explained that the studio rebuilt its weather engine to support localized, persistent, and dynamic conditions. Players may bask in sunshine in one corner of the map while watching a rainstorm roll in the distance. The world will also render rainbows and puddles, letting players infer that weather recently passed through an area they never witnessed. Wind, meanwhile, will ripple across water surfaces, sweep hair around, and scatter debris through the environment.

The visual impact of these storms is designed to be immersive. According to Rockstar, heavy clouds, strong winds, and dense atmospherics combine so that everything drips wet, with water gushing off roof edges and lampposts while thunder rumbles and lightning dramatically illuminates the clouds.

Rockstar’s Biggest and Densest Map Yet

Aaron Garbut, co-studio head of Rockstar North, confirmed that GTA 6’s map is twice as large as that of GTA 5, with a particular emphasis on density. The game’s world is divided into six distinct regions, anchored by Vice City, the locale familiar to players from 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The other areas of Leonida include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

“This new world is different. We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out. This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.”

Each region appears to carry its own character, with some likely to feature distinct factions. Ambrosia, a more rural stretch dominated by factories and refineries, is controlled by a biker gang that appears distinct from the Lost MC seen in earlier entries. Rockstar says the campaign is designed to guide players across the vast map, showcasing the sharp contrast between Leonida’s affluent and more impoverished areas, though it will not cover every inch of the world.

Wildlife, Hunting, and the Return of Tracking

Players will encounter and interact with more than 170 animal species, including over 60 birds, more than 30 land mammals, and a variety of fish and reptiles. Rockstar’s vice president of dynamic art, Michael Kane, said the studio aimed to faithfully reproduce Florida’s diverse ecosystem across Leonida’s different biomes.

“Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida – urban and rural environs, aquatic life both inland and ocean, and the wetland habitats like the swamps and Everglades. The animal art and population teams are incredibly passionate about delivering animals that are accurately researched and look visually correct in every respect, alongside the supporting movement and animation to bring them to life.”

Aquatic life will feature distinct movement behavior, with sharks, jellyfish, whales, turtles, and rays appearing in the sea and potentially encountered while scuba diving. Hunting also appears to return, with a screenshot showing protagonist Jason approaching deer with a rifle, and players will be able to track animals and hunt for rare species.

Choices, Crimes, and a World That Responds

Rockstar also detailed the gameplay systems that will define the player experience. Robberies offer considerable flexibility, letting players choose whether to go alone or as a duo, and loud or quiet, with decisions shaping the police response. Protagonists Jason and Lucia can flee together or split up, though if either is overwhelmed by law enforcement, the run is over.

Carjacking gains new depth and risk, with higher-end vehicles requiring special tools to steal and potentially fitted with trackers or security systems. Players can use an app called WAiNK to assess a car’s resale value and conversion costs before taking it to a fence to offload it. Beyond the crime, the relationship between Jason and Lucia will be shaped by player choice, from taking the pair on dates to small gestures like holding hands.

Rockstar confirmed that choices both big and small will influence not only the protagonists’ bond but the story as a whole, encouraging multiple playthroughs. “As the pressure for us on this project is huge, we dealt with that by doing our best to overdeliver,” Garbut said. “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialed up – detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density. I don’t think we have ever created anything close to this before.”

Looking Ahead

Alongside the written feature, Rockstar shared 15 new screenshots, including one exclusive to IGN, offering a closer look at the world, its characters, and a vintage Vice City outfit collection. While the studio has not yet pinned down a precise release date beyond its planned 2025 launch window, the depth of detail revealed suggests Rockstar is positioning GTA 6 as a defining next-generation experience. As the countdown continues, fans await further gameplay reveals that will flesh out the side activities, from base jumping and jet skiing to scuba diving and street racing, that will fill out life in Leonida.
