Dog in the Machine Reimagines Into The Breach’s Domino Tactics as a Mecha-Hound Puzzle Showdown

Studio Chahut and Goblinz Publishing have unveiled Dog in the Machine, a turn-based tactics puzzler that reworks the domino-chain puzzle design of Into The Breach into a colourful mecha-dog arena, with players guiding their robotic hounds through trick-laden grid battles. Set in a whirring mecha-city where humans have been exiled and cleaning bots rampage through the streets, the game launches on 27 September, and a playable demo is now available on Steam for those eager to test the concept before the full release.

The core loop is deceptively simple: move your Autodog around a modestly sized grid to defeat a swarm of hostile bots while managing a limited energy supply. That budget governs regular moves, repeatable “core” attacks, once-per-turn special abilities, and wildcard “tricks” such as duplicating the previous special ability or “teleporting” through a tunnel. Because you’re consistently outnumbered, efficiency is everything, and the smartest players learn to turn enemies against one another — a charging bite can knock one foe directly into the path of another’s attack.

A Puzzle Built Around Props and Terrain

What sets Dog in the Machine apart from its Into The Breach cousin is a heavier emphasis on the environment itself. Rather than relying purely on piece movement and threat prediction, players are encouraged to exploit terrain fixtures such as conveyor belts and impact-triggered laser defences. The result is a relatively relaxed experience: moves can be undone without penalty, and some of the maps are described as being almost like pinball machines. This focus on interactive scenery gives the puzzle layer a tactile, physical quality that rewards experimentation over rigid planning.

Adding to the tension is an alarm bar gauge that ends the game once it fills completely. Enemies contribute points to the meter, but damaging and destroying them removes those points — a system reminiscent of the alert mechanic in Invincible Inc, though reportedly less elaborate. It injects a sense of urgency into every engagement, forcing players to balance aggression with caution.
