The film has now surpassed a staggering $1.5 billion internationally, and to celebrate, IMAX screenings will be extended through September 30th!
A Box Office Triumph
Reports from Deadline confirm that “The Odyssey” has earned over $1.59 billion at the global box office, making it Nolan’s most commercially successful film to date and the 17th movie ever to cross the $1 billion mark internationally. What’s truly remarkable is that “The Odyssey” stands alone as a non-sequel and non-remake to achieve this feat since James Cameron’s “Avatar” in 2009. Other films joining this exclusive club include blockbusters like “Avengers: Endgame,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Breaking Records, One Screen at a Time
“From its record-breaking opening to this historic milestone, The Odyssey has captivated audiences around the world,” said Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of Distribution at Universal Pictures International. “We are incredibly proud to have partnered with Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and everyone at Syncopy to share this visionary theatrical experience with audiences everywhere.”
In late August, “The Odyssey” also dethroned “Deadpool & Wolverine” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. This news prompted a humorous congratulations from Ryan Reynolds, who posted a video mashup of Deadpool fighting Wolverine in a Honda Odyssey alongside clips from Nolan’s epic.
Nolan’s Vision Lives On
“Obviously, [The Odyssey] is an incredible, incredible movie. Christopher Nolan literally breathes the rarest air on Earth. He’s a singular filmmaker,” Ryan Reynolds told Variety. “I mean, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, who’s clearly batting a thousand stars with Zendaya. I just love that people are going to the movie theaters. I don’t even care why or for what reason. Just go to the movie theaters. There’s no better shared experience.”
To ensure audiences can experience Nolan’s vision as intended, 70mm IMAX screenings of the film are being extended until September 30th due to the limited number of screens worldwide. This is the second extension, further solidifying its already impressive box office performance.
A Summer of Blockbuster Success
“The Odyssey” dominated the summer alongside “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which swung past “Avengers: Endgame’s” record to become the highest-grossing domestic film in history, as well as the most profitable Spider-Man movie of all time, becoming the first one to reach $2 billion in theaters.
