Pokémon Celebrates 30 Years: New Games, Movies, and Championship Victories!

The Pokémon World Championships just wrapped up in San Francisco, marking a monumental year for the franchise as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Alongside the inaugural PokémonXP fan event, this weekend was packed with exciting announcements about what’s coming next for players of all ages.

New Animated Adventures on the Horizon

Get ready for two brand-new animated projects! First up is Pokémon: Wild Card, slated for release in 2027. This feature-length film, produced by Story inc. and CloverWorks, follows an aspiring Pokémon Trading Card Game player alongside Mimikyu, the Disguise Pokémon. Following that, fans were treated to a first look at Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, a charming stop-motion series from Aardman, the studio behind Wallace and Gromit. A teaser trailer was unveiled during a behind-the-scenes panel featuring Aardman’s Tom Parkinson, Nat McKay, and James Young, alongside Pokémon’s director of original animation, Phil Rynda.

Champions Crowned, New Mega Evolutions Incoming

On the gaming front, Pokémon Champions is getting a significant update on September 9th. Prepare for the arrival of Z Mega Evolutions! Mega Lucario Z, Mega Garchomp Z, and Mega Absol Z are joining the battle alongside Baxcalibur and Rillaboom. More details about Heatran’s inclusion are promised soon.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game isn’t being left out either. A wave of powerful Mega attack rare cards is on its way, including Mega Rayquaza ex, Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Greninja ex, and Mega Zygarde ex. A brand-new ex★ Series featuring Raikou, Entei, and Suicune will also be available. And for those playing Pokémon TCG Pocket, dual-type Pokémon are coming in October!

Pokémon Go Gets a Battle Boost!

Pokémon Go celebrated its own 10th anniversary this weekend with some exciting news for battlers. Eligible Mega-Evolved Pokémon will now gain a third Charged Attack and become usable at every level of the Go Battle League starting next season. And keep an eye out, because Armoured Mewtwo is making a comeback soon!

Finally, Pokémon Unite is expanding its roster with the addition of Morpeko, Toxtricity, Jolteon, and Flareon.

Lego Pokémon Coming Soon!

Five new Lego Pokémon sets are planned for release in 2027, although details remain scarce. We’re eagerly awaiting more information on these!

Congratulations to the Champions!

Amidst all the announcements, this year’s champions were crowned across various competitions. A huge congratulations to Vikram Thiagarajan from the UK, who took home the gold in the Video Game Senior Division.
