In an era where artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming various industries, including gaming, CD Projekt Red has reaffirmed its commitment to a human-centric approach in the development of The Witcher 4. Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski recently addressed how the studio views AI’s role in game creation, emphasizing that while AI tools are valuable, they will not replace the creativity and expertise of human developers.
Human Craftsmanship at the Core
During a recent earnings briefing, Nowakowski acknowledged that “AI is definitely becoming a thing in games development.” However, he firmly stated that CD Projekt Red remains “predominantly using people” to craft its intricate and immersive gaming experiences. As reported by PC Gamer, the studio believes that AI should serve as a tool to enhance, not replace, the work of talented individuals.
Nowakowski explained that CD Projekt Red creates “very complex games,” and relying solely on AI would not be “the right or ethical path to follow.” The studio’s dedication to quality and artistic vision necessitates a strong foundation of human ingenuity.
A Matter of Choice
While acknowledging the growing influence of AI in game development, Nowakowski also pointed out that each studio must determine its own approach. “So whether this is true for the whole industry, I’m not the person to make those statements. I think everybody has to make those judgments on their own,” he said. This suggests a diverse landscape within the gaming world, with varying levels of AI integration.
The Witcher 4 is set for release in 2028, marking the beginning of a new trilogy. In addition to The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red is also hard at work on Cyberpunk 2 and a highly anticipated multiplayer Witcher game. The studio’s commitment to human-driven development ensures that these upcoming titles will retain the quality and artistry that fans have come to expect.
