With BlizzCon 2024 just around the corner, a wave of excitement is rippling through the gaming community. Why? Because eagle-eyed fans have noticed some peculiar “glitches” on Blizzard’s official StarCraft website”>StarCraft website that suggest something big might be brewing for the beloved sci-fi franchise.
Decoding the Digital Breadcrumbs
The anomalies, first flagged on Bluesky”>Bluesky by John Carson, appear specifically on the section of the website dedicated to StarCraft Remastered (2017), rather than StarCraft II. These “glitches” manifest as brief distortions in images and text. While seemingly minor, their timing and location have fueled speculation that Blizzard is intentionally teasing an announcement.
The last major news regarding StarCraft was back in 2017 with StarCraft II: Void Emitters. Since then, there has been little to no activity. However, rumors have surfaced over the years, hinting at a potential revival. One such rumor involved the publisher behind Arc Raiders reportedly working on a StarCraft shooter that could be revealed at BlizzCon. More recently, a report from The Chosun Daily suggested that Nexon was exploring the possibility of developing a new real-time strategy (RTS) game, potentially StarCraft III.
The prospect of any significant development in the StarCraft universe is undoubtedly welcome news for long-time fans. StarCraft II was released in three main components between 2010 and 2015, with only a remaster of the original following. As Blizzard shifted its focus to maintaining World of Warcraft and developing Overwatch, the real-time strategy series understandably took a backseat. However, the StarCraft games remain classics in the genre, and fans have endured years of hoping for news about the canceled StarCraft: Ghost spin-off.
StarCraft II received a notable update earlier this year, which could be part of an effort to rekindle interest in the franchise. If the revival comes solely in the form of a shooter, it might disappoint those hoping for Blizzard’s return to the strategy genre. However, if complemented by a new RTS developed by Nexon, it could soften the blow, although the lack of direct Blizzard involvement might temper the excitement. But as they say, beggars can’t be choosers.
The opening ceremony of BlizzCon is scheduled for 10:30 AM PT / 1:30 PM ET on Saturday, September 12. If there’s any life left in the StarCraft franchise, it’s almost certain that we’ll see some indication of it there. Otherwise, someone needs to have a serious talk with Blizzard’s webmaster.
