Dungeons & Dragons fans, rejoice! The upcoming crossover with World of Warcraft promises an epic adventure into the iconic lands of Azeroth. Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Blizzard are pulling out all the stops, bringing multiple WoW classes, subclasses, spells, items, and enemies to the tabletop experience. But what about the reverse? Could we see D&D elements making their way into the digital realms of World of Warcraft?
A Glimmer of Hope for a Reciprocal Crossover
While WotC remains tight-lipped on any official plans, hints dropped during an interview at Gen Con with GameSpot’s Jessica Cogswell suggest that something more might be brewing. “I cannot say at this time,” said Holly Longdale, VP of World of Warcraft at Blizzard. “Not at this time. This is a grand experiment. I am really excited to see where it goes.” Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons, added with a knowing glance, hinting at the possibility of future developments.
If a reciprocal crossover is indeed in the works, expect any official announcements to drop during BlizzCon later this month. Blizzard’s annual celebration of all things gaming typically kicks off with a grand opening ceremony (September 12th) and features dedicated panels throughout the weekend. This year, World of Warcraft will be under the spotlight with a 45-minute “What’s Next” panel on the main stage, strongly suggesting some significant news is coming.
Beyond just D&D elements, Ayoub also teased that StarCraft could potentially make its way to the tabletop world. Holly Longdale playfully responded, “I know a guy,” further fueling speculation about future expansions and possibilities. While WotC continues to introduce new IPs into Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons through Universes Beyond, Ayoub emphasized that the core games won’t be neglected in favor of these crossovers.
