The Blue Blur is heading to the battle royale arena, but not without a few creative compromises. Takashi Iizuka, a key figure at Sega’s Sonic Team, recently revealed the challenges faced in bringing Sonic to Fortnite and how they overcame them to deliver a unique playable skin.
A Sonic Without a Gun? The Challenge Accepted!
While Shadow the Hedgehog is known for his edgy persona and penchant for weaponry, Sonic represents a different kind of hero. He’s all about speed, positive energy, and using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to overcome obstacles. This presented a unique hurdle when Epic Games initially approached Sega about creating Sonic skins for Fortnite.
“Epic Games came and spoke with us a couple years ago about putting Sonic in Fortnite, but Sonic is a character that will never hold a gun,” Iizuka explained. The team needed to find a way to integrate Sonic into Fortnite’s gameplay without compromising his core identity. Their solution? A brand new variant of the iconic hedgehog.
Introducing Android Sonic: A Futuristic Twist
Taking inspiration from Metal Sonic, the team developed an “Android” version of Sonic. This futuristic iteration is equipped to handle Fortnite’s arsenal of weapons, allowing him to participate fully in the battle royale experience.
“Because we made this Android version of Sonic, we were able to get this Android Sonic into Fortnite, have him hold a gun, and have him be able to really play inside Fortnite and be integrated into the game,” Iizuka elaborated. This allowed them to create a Sonic skin that felt authentic while still fitting within the established Fortnite universe.
Design Considerations: Longer Legs for Seamless Integration
The creation of Android Sonic wasn’t without its design considerations. To ensure seamless integration with Fortnite’s diverse roster of characters and items, subtle adjustments were made to his proportions.
“One of the things that’s really important in Fortnite is to be able to have all the weapons and items and things to be used amongst all the different characters,” Iizuka explained. “So, if we had our regular version of Sonic in there, it really wouldn’t work.” To achieve this, Android Sonic features slightly longer legs, allowing him to wield a wider range of Fortnite weaponry effectively.
A Collaborative Effort: Blending Worlds
The creation of Android Sonic was a true collaborative effort between Sega and Epic Games. The team worked closely to ensure that the new character felt both authentic to the Sonic universe and seamlessly integrated into Fortnite’s established gameplay.
“We needed to have a character shape that is similar to all the other Fortnite characters,” Iizuka continued. “That was something that Epic Games said was really important, that we need to make sure we have the same shapes as all the other characters.” This collaborative approach resulted in a unique and exciting addition to Fortnite’s ever-expanding roster of playable characters.
